A tourist hotel owner at Unawatuna, his son and another individual had been arrested by the Galle Division Crime Investigations Unit for stealing foreign currency valued more than Rs. 6 million belonging to a group of Russian tourists.
The Crime Investigations Unit and Unawatuna Tourist Police that conducted the investigations based on complaints received from a group of Russian tourists staying in two hotels had arrested the owner, his son and an accountant of a hotel.
Police said the suspects had allegedly stolen cash Rs. 752,772, US$ 61,000, Ruble 195,000 and Euro 200.
Investigations revealed that the safes containing cash in hotel rooms could be opened with one key.
A senior police official said Data in the CCTV system near the rooms had been erased and that it was referred to the Government Analyst to restore the recordings.
Galle Division Crimes Investigation Unit and Habaraduwa Police are conducting further investigations with the help of Unawatuna Tourist Police. (D.G.Sugathapala)
