The recent tax increases introduced by the government will result in massive social unrest, MP Patali Champika Ranawaka said yesterday.“The lower middle class would fall into lower strata, while the upper middle class would become lower middle class because of tax increases. There will also be massive migration and Sri Lanka will become a human desert.

There will be social unrest at the end of the day.therefore the Central Bank and the Ministry of Finance will have to create a scientific tax regime,” the MP said in a special statement.

“There are no funds to pay salaries for the public servant. October is a difficult month. The Government cannot even think of how to pay salaries in November.the situation will be the same in December. Government anticipate that it will be able to generate some funds with tax increases. Government is also forced to issue treasury bonds at a high rate of 37 per cent.the incumbent Minister of Finance and Central Bank Governor is following a similar approach just like their predecessors. Taxes have been increased to sectors which cannot bear it by any means. Therefore, it is wrong to impose taxes without considering the situation of society. One should understand that tax increase could cause destruction,” the MP added.

The MP said the decision to make everyone who earns a monthly salary more than Rs 100,000 pay income tax would adversely affect a majority of both public servants and private sector workers.“This is the real situation though Rs 100,000 seems to be a high figure,” he therefore said. (YOHAN PERERA)

Sri Lanka certainly won't be a human desert. All the people whom the politicians want (for votes) will remain. The productive people will migrate. After all that's what all you guys want! Votes! No one of you guys bother to team up and develop the country!

Oh, no the idiot brigade has started about trying to fund the impossible ongoing government paid salary expenses. Relative to the world, with the extensive money printing we can easy stay middle income simply because we have such oversized lot of people with salary paid for by government. With enough money printing could even aspire for higher even. More than tax, the government and parliament, and the President is what people shouldn't want to bear anymore. Taxes, like death are inevitable for the foreseeable time in every country, but the use of the collected taxes can be bearable, if used responsibly. Or can be like here utterly unfair with how it is expended. Too much money to the military!

SJB predicted a lot of dire things but they did not happen. How are they proposing to pay for increased cost of education, health and transport services without increasing tax to those who are able to pay?

this would lead for commencing another wave of unrest, could destruct upcoming tourism season ..

True. Also sectors like IT will shrink as India, Pakistan, Bangladesh will get more opportunity due to low cost in those countries and stability compared to Sri Lanka. Foolish decision just to grab some money from people and pay the over populated public sector. What should happen is layoff unnecessary public sector staff gradually over a period of 1-2 years.

Are you one of them> Saturday, 15 October 2022 10:24 AM

You all opposition MPs have one way thinking; Say something to increase your vote bank. You are supposed say an an alternative, instead of parroting what we all know. e.g. Say something: on how to stop waste in benefits to MPs; to bring back looted monies especially $; how to flush out black money that has reached he CID level, through the money laundering women in Police custody. Do you know what N.M.Perera did to bring out black money? He demonetized and all the black money flew in to banks as deposits, and relief was given. Are you afraid to do it? Does it mean you too have undeclared assets? Nobody will blame you, if you are one of them!

I can only assume most of the comments are made by people who don't live here. The income that people have is spoken for. If you remove some in tax they can't pay their debts. Almost every person in LKA lives like the country did. They borrowed everything they could when they could. Taxes need to be increased and more importantly the tax net needs to be widened. It just needs to be done gradually not in a big jump like this. I would also suggest relaxing interest income tax or you will stop people saving.

    sam Saturday, 15 October 2022 11:25 AM

What unrest? Majority of the people will be on the road looking for essentials.

Easiest way to increase revenue is to increase taxes but the difficult way to increase revenue/make saving is by privatising all loss making state owned enterprises and reducing public sector workers including politicians. Every govt takes the easy way, simple

In this hyper inflation situ, burdening the individuals with more tax is a mad thing. We have some real morons in that mad house.

    Sandy Saturday, 15 October 2022 12:41 PM

Champika is talking as if he knows an easy way out of current situation

Taxes were coming and there is no way out. BUT, are the rich taxed proportionately What about those who benefitted from Gotha's tax benefits? Are they paying up now? What about the 17-year tax amnesty requested by BoA for an Indian investor? Is that normal? All foreign investors should pay a reasonable tax to the government, no exceptions! If a mechanism is put into place to recover all the looted money, we will be able to meet most of our needs. But there is no talk about that, why? Because it will touch those in power. Unashamedly, there are those who still stoop low to make money out of foreign aid.

Main thing is not to worry. As long as we pay sufficient taxes to maintain the Ministers together with their security and perks, all the parasites will be happy and we will be the unhappy lot

    Nimal Saturday, 15 October 2022 04:08 PM

N0 to Taxation - Stop the pension schemes for MPs . Reduction the in number of Ministers and State Ministers and their budgets . Review and retrench staff from public service, Turn all state enterprises to non loss making institutions.

A mutt Champika must understand one thing clearly, that the conditions of IMF are implemented in an advance manner. This is the beginning of the END of United Sri Lanka concept, and Kamala Harris is working behind to create TAMIL EELAM in Sri Lanka.

Dirty desire Sunday, 16 October 2022 10:26 PM

If you have guts go public with your identity. What is being discussed here is taxation. The concept of a united Sri Lanks was sheveled by the SL govt., decades ago (even before Kamala Haris was born). It did not just stop there. SLPP made it worse. Commenting out of context, it looks like you are highly desirable of a devided SL.

This guy and his boss have been blaming the tax reductions in 2019. Now they have started talking against the tax hike. Typical hypocritical mentality, all in his party and his leader appear to suffering from the sane.
