Claiming that the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) is incurring a loss of Rs. 423 billion even after the recent tariff revision, Power and Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekara said today increasing eletricity tariffs will be inevitable for continuation of power supply.

He told Parliament that the generation cost at present is Rs. 889 billion and that only Rs. 400 billion is being receiving even after the tariff increase in August.

The Minister said the recent tariff increase was not what was requested by the CEB and added that the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) approved only Rs. 250 billion whereas the CEB requested Rs. 600 billion.

He said the CEB was spending Rs. 56.90 per unit as generation cost whereas only Rs. 29 was levied from the consumers.

The Minister accused PUCSL of not presenting a generation plan and said it was the duty of the commission to prepare a generation plan and to see that it is implemented.

He said if the PUCSL had increased electricity tarrifs to cover the generation cost from 2013, people would not have undergone huge tariff hike at once.

He said the Ministry presented a Cabinet Paper last week to allow PUCSL to revise electricity tarrifs in January and July every year. (Ajith Siriwardana and Yohan Perera)

CEB like all other State Institutions is corrupt to the core. Ministers, GM's and DGM's of CEB are often treated to holidays to Singapore, KL and BKK by suppliers. Therefore, increasing tariff to pay for corruption is not what public want.

His statements indicate that the tariffs are likely to be doubled very soon. Mismanagement and corruption to the core. Then ask the consumer to foot the bill. No concern at all for the people of this country. What a sordid minister. If you cannot perform properly better resign without heaping further misery on the people.

Domestic consumers pay as high as 75/- for incremental units. Increase the industrial tariff to match. the CEB cost could be recouped. Also, promote RE instead of thermal

How you going to make solar or other weak renewables work when it's dark or when it's raining? Only fools think renewable by themselves is the answer for reliable 24 hours uninterruptible electricity.

Mr. Minister please note that however much you increase the Farid and people suffer for an institution which is corrupt and overstaffed miss managed with no service mindset or even want to encourage alternate/Green energy, with this in mind best is to restructure and privatize the service for a better service and better tarrif. We can be profitable and fast and we can be energy sufficent and for sure with new initiatives we can be competitive in the world with much less production cost in the Manufacturing sector.

The government cops Rs. 27.90 per unit. This is fine for the poor who would be consuming electricity for small industries, educating kids etc. The problem is that this same subsidy is given to the super rich to run their ACs and all. How fair is that?

    Ravi Friday, 25 November 2022 04:52 PM

Restructure the CEB and send the excess staff home. Most of them are political appointees.

Food first religious place last Friday, 25 November 2022 05:59 PM

The temples are looking for much greater discount all after wasting electricity on unnecessary light shows and loud speaker activity. PUCSL has according to the minister being acting irresponsibly since 2013. CEB is never going to be profitable as long as the madman who is the head of it, is giving unwarranted discounts to temples and other religious places.

CEB is one of the most corrupt organisations in the country. Have you noticed the jobs on the roads where 2 people are working and 10 are sitting down smoking or chatting. The same takes place at all levels within the organisation. Why are engineers paid dollar salaries? We have many engineers passing out. Why can't they be taken in? Is the minister deaf or blind or both? Telling us all these stories.

Loss is due to excess staff, high remuneration and mismanagement. Consumers become responsible for these lapses

    Arun Saturday, 26 November 2022 09:33 PM

Hon. Minister, if you get all the arrears from state institutions most of the burden that your ministry facing will be solved at once. We as a citizens kindly request you to do without any partial action towards it.

Problem solved Sunday, 27 November 2022 09:46 AM

Just ration electricity. Allow only 30 units per household per month, maximum. No refrigerator, no computer, no tv and of course no a/c. Night time only one light is permitted per household. Setup a police force to enforce this.

In my humble opinion ..get into technology by computerising the functionality of its operations, staff and resources as other countries are doing. Completely computerised system in place in power and energy sectors. . I've done the document computerisation process in all govt bodies and statutory bodies including payments to get rid of excess staff and operation and as you see it's a total improvement and cost saving now think and ponder over it. This is what happens when the wrong people are holding post ignorant of the facts . Majority of the so called engineers work requirements can be automated properly and get rid of them . As it is they aren't in office but minding there private businesses ? After signing the registers.

    Sambo Sunday, 27 November 2022 10:43 AM

Mr. Minister. Don't you have the brains to first find out from where the losses are being made instead of increasing the prices at you whims and fancies. The department is full of over staff mainly political appointees, corruption and wastage. Please look into these as well before you open you mouth to increase the tariff.

That man, father of this donkey joined the Myna group and stolen lots of money using the fancy words such as Socialism - Viplawaya - Adhirajya Wadaya - Janathawata Vimukthiya!! Now his son is a back washer!!
