The suspect arrested over the death of a businessman whose body was found in a swiming pool in Thalangama recently reportedly confessed to the police that he had killed the businessman following a dispute over their relationship.

The body of the businessman Roshan Wanninayaka was found in his 3 storied building which is being constructed at Pelawatta, Thalangama.

The police on Sunday arrested the 27-year old suspect and his wife in connection with the death of the 49-year-old businessman from Wellampitiya.

According to the investigation, the suspect and the businessman are members of a gay men's dating club and the suspect maintained close relations with various people for money through the club.

After the marriage, the suspect reportedly left that practice. However, he again joined the gay club due to financial difficulties even though he is married.

The suspect had told the police that he recognized the deceased businessman in question through the gay club and went there on January 30 after the businessman had informed him to come to his house being constructed in Pelawatte.

Police investigations found that both the victim and the suspect had arrived at the house. It was reported the suspect had asked the businessman for Rs 100,000, but he refused to give it.  As a result there was an argument between the two.

Police said the suspect pushed the businessman and hit him on the head with a stick after which he fell to the ground. Then he pulled the businessman into the pool and took the victim's mobile phone and credit cards and returned to his wife's house in Kolonnawa in the victim's car.

Police Spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa said both the suspect and his wife were travelling to Katunayake in the businessman's car.

He said they had obtained two air tickets to go to Indonesia with the credit card of the businessman, and had not been able to go abroad due to a problem in obtaining visas.

Meanwhile, the post moterm examination into the death of the businessman was conducted and it was found that the death was a result of blunt force blows to the head.

The spokesman said since the body of the businessman was not recognized by their relatives, a DNA test will be conducted.

The suspect couple was produced before the Kaduwela Magistrate Court and ordered to be detained 48 hours for further questioning.(Darshana Sanjeewa Balasuriya)

  • Lasantha de Silva, homosexual in Sri Lanka Tuesday, 07 February 2023 01:35 AM

This is what happens when homosexuals are forced to lead a life that is excepted and deny their true feelings and marry someone from the opposite sex. Homosexuality is not a choice! It is the way God created us. Believe me, I never chose to live this lonely difficult life, I wish I was an heterosexual. It would be so much easier and safer. But I am an homosexual, I can not change that.

Dilan Fernando Tuesday, 07 February 2023 12:51 PM

This is nothing to do with sexuality. It is a money matter. So do not promote homosexuality.

    jo Tuesday, 07 February 2023 12:59 PM

Homosexuality and other forms of sexual drives except for heterosexuality may be natural but they are a kind of disorders. Those people need extra love, care and rehabilitation. But in the name of these abnormal sexual drives, people cannot be allowed to make groups and gather people for an abnormal life style.

We are forced to follow the perverted West and encouraging homosexuality; now see the results . Married rich men get bored sleeping with the same wife, so hire men and have gay sex. All talking about LGBT rights must be investigated .

    Roisin Tuesday, 07 February 2023 10:50 AM

You forgot heterosexual men abusing women. That is abnormal, homosexuality is not abnormal.

So the alleged murderer is bisexual !! Huh that's interesting!! Now things are moving fast and extreme!!!! Way to go LGBTQ!! Good progress!!!

    LankanLover Tuesday, 07 February 2023 12:32 PM

Oh my goodness I never thought this murder has a story behind like this! they were in physical relationship not love relationship, this young guy should be punished severely for killing an individual over money! shame

    Adwani Tuesday, 07 February 2023 02:37 PM

Homosexuality is abnormality, Men and Women are created by God to marry. Men cannot marry men and Women and cannot marry women, the purpose is lost, so the lives.

    Todd Tuesday, 07 February 2023 03:55 PM

Neither of their sexual preference is the cause of this murder. It's about one person extorting money from another. Crazy to see some users commenting here that their sexuality is to blame. Everyday we see crimes of passion, corruption, extortion; it doesn't mean that crime picks out victims based on their sexuality. Saw one bugger has said in comments, "Way to go LGBTQ!! Good progress!!!". That cracked my ribs for laughing too much. I'm sure he/she must be saying "Way to go Heterosexuals!!" everyday seeing all the crimes happening in the country committed by heterosexual.

Kamal Hewage Tuesday, 07 February 2023 03:58 PM

Reading these comments says it all you need to know why Sri Lanka is in the way it is today... Supposedly educated audiences are still holding onto the views (I.e. Homesexuality is abnormal etc) that rest of the world discarded well over half a century ago in 1960s. They are incapable of relying on evidence based science or modernising as a society. Everyone and everything is judged on religion.

    Arnold Tuesday, 07 February 2023 04:04 PM

When holes are used for other than the intended purpose, murders happen. BAN LGBT in Sri Lanka and save the future generation.
