The price of a 50kg bag of urea fertilizer sold to farmers by the two state-owned fertilizer companies will be priced at Rs. 9,000 from June 15.
The decision was taken during a discussion held by Agriculture Minister Mahinda Amaraweera on reducing the price of urea this morning (31).
Another 31,500 metric tons of urea is scheduled to arrive between June 10-12.
The minister mentioned that this step was taken to give the farmers the advantage of the rupee gained strength against the US$ and the downward trend in the price of urea in the global market.
"A bag of urea is sold by the private sector at Rs. 42,000 during the last yala season, has now been brought down by the private sector to Rs. 11,000. The reason for this was that the government took steps to provide a bag of urea to the farmers at a minimum price of Rs. 10,000," the minister said. (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)

This is not for the love towards farmers this is to fool them and get their votes as the elections are due in the near future. The last 75 years this was the method adopted by these two parties. It was in the news that free distribution of food among low income families amounting to 2.5 million families are in the horizon to hoodwink them this too. Hope people will enjoy the food and vote for some one else.
