Sri Lanka's Parliament which faces more fights and arguments than valuable speeches in recent times, saw a different kind of an argument emerge today when the Speaker was told off by a state minister for being called just an MP.

The argument emerged when State Minister Chamara Sampath Dassanayake, lost his cool when Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena incorrectly called him as an MP, signalling him to speak in Parliament.

"Speaker, I am not an MP. President Ranil Wickremesinghe has given me a portfolio. Don't you know this? Thanks to the President I was given a state ministry. So please don't call me an MP. Please work according to the Parliament agenda," he lashed out.

The Speaker who could not control back his laughter at what the State Minister had said ended up apologizing to cool Chamara's temper. (Jamila Husain)

There is no law in Sri Lanka obliging you to address someone by their title. However, it is polite to address one by their academic title, such as Doctor, as they have often worked for years to obtain that title. In contrast, titles such as minister, professor, or even president are only temporary job titles that have not been acquired academically. The crooked and uneducated Chamara Sampath Dassanayake must have a great morbid sense of inferiority, which was already evident in 2018 when he had to resign as Provincial Education Minister because he demeaned a local school principal. It is clear that an educated man like Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena can only laugh at such an idiot.

Display of uneducated. I believe he is one of those who could not complete Year 10. Not a Minister in any other country.

You may be right about his actually having studied up to Grade 10. In the Badulla Distict they say he was in Naulla MV Demodera, only up to Grade 5. Sold vadai on Trains.

A small fry has got inferiority complex. There is a saying, ‘ if a pauper gets a pot of gold, he will insist on holding an umbrella over him even at his bed time’. This is the problem with Sri Lankan chauvinistic politicians. Instead of being pious they want to have a feather in their cap.

A classic example of uneducated and uncivilized people gaining some degree of authority that they do not justly deserve. However, they will not enjoy this status for long.

I hear that Chamara Sampath has got Pandals with photo erected declaring him as state minister. But nobody address him as minister. It is natural he gets annoyed. By the way, what state minister is he? Ranil is very vicious, in putting this man on the Murunga tree! Now he refused to come down. This is the same as MR taking Ranaweera to New Delhi to introduce to Modi as the "Man who spilled chili paste on Speaker's chair.

The MP should be offended if the speaker called him "Jara Bhai" or scumbag!! Yeah!!
