Sri Lanka expresses interest to host 2026 Commonwealth Games

Sri Lanka is among the countries which has reportedly expressed interest to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games, the BBC reported.

Accordingly, Australia, Canada, India, and Sri Lanka have expressed interest in staging the 2026 Games but, as yet, a host has not been secured.

“I am quietly confident that we will be announcing [the 2026 host] in the first quarter of next year, prior to Birmingham. We are working with cities and countries,” Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) President Dame Louise Martin said.

“Hopefully next year we will be able to showcase that you can bring in other countries to host together. We’ve been trying hard to get the smaller countries to host a Games, but they are too small to do it the way it’s gone.”

“So that is why we are looking at the roadmap, to see what is necessary, what do we really need to do. If somebody has a fantastic athletics stadium but the country next to them has got a fantastic shooting range, link up together and see what we can do,” she further said.

In 2017, Durban was stripped of the right to stage the 2022 Games after a trail of missed deadlines and financial problems, highlighting the burdens facing host cities for major sporting events.

Oh no, not again! What is this madness? The government does not even have enough money to pay an allowance to people who cannot afford one let alone 3 meals a day yet they are dreaming of building sports infrastructure costing millions to tax payer that would largely go unused after the games. Stupidity of some have no bounds. How many medals have we won at the games? Won't it be better to try and improve performance of our athletes using just a fraction of that money?

This is where the opposition has to ply their duty. The should write to the governing body of Commonwealth games asking not to select A Sri Lankan City for games as country is struggling with high cost of living and short of funds for basic services. That is enough.

Hambantota competed with the Gold Coast Australia in a bid to host the 2018 Commonwealth Games and was unsuccessful and might stand a very good chance second time around. One reason being Gold Coast already had all the infrastructure and is the tourist hub of Australia and received more tourists annually than the whole of Sri Lanka. For example in 2019 before the Covid pandemic struck the Gold Coast received approximately 5.3 million tourists to Sri Lanka's 1.9 million tourists.
