Claiming that he would no longer approve overseas travel for Sri Lanka Cricket officials, Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe said that he has requested SLC to spend more on developing school cricket.

“SLC spends lakhs on the expenses of these travelling officials per tour, which is a waste. I have therefore asked them to channel this money towards the development of the sport in poorer schools around the island,” the Minister said. “I will not give permission to send officials on overseas trip.”

The matter of SLC administrators travelling overseas in an official capacity using money from SLC has been a contentious issue for Minister Ranasinghe.

He butted heads with the current SLC administration over its expenditure to send around 17 officials for the T20 World Cup in Australia last year. (Susil Premalal)

Thanks, very good move Hon. Minister, stop sending Officials from SLC Board as they go and enjoy with their families in Top class star Hotels, stop these nonsense hereafters and as you said improve the school cricket island-wise.

Before you open your mouth and promise towards doing things, try to effectively practice what you preach. Tomorrow we will read in the papers that so many xxx number of officials accompanied the cricketers and at that time you will be silently eating pittu.

Hon. Sports Minister, one more thing you will have to do, i.e.. chase out the Board Members, Team selectors, Coach etc., before SL Cricket go to the bottom again.

Please make our Cricket Legends to come forward and voluntarily help to improve the school cricket.

Good move, long overdue. When these perennial office bearers of this cash cow realise that avenues to make merry have run out, they will abandon the joint in droves once and for all.

Very good but no exceptions for your favourites. That is usual style in Sri Lanka whether State Services. Judiciary, police or any other. See tne appointment of IGP, still waiting for cases to be dropped against Desabandu. Straightforward cases against passport offences of MPs Diana

If Minister has his people in SLC they no problem with their money wasting conduct Thursday, 06 July 2023 11:18 PM

Minister has no cronies in the SLC that is why he is upset. SLC will claim he is again using his political powers to prevent their business from operating in the way the elected SLC officials want. Te SLC way by the way is corrupt and goes against all good conduct, but all elected sports officials in Sri Lanka are smilar, whether it be Cricket, Football, or Rugby, they are 100 percent following traditional Sri Lanka cultural approach.

Officials are misusing the SLC funds. When there are matches entire cricket board is going to see the matches at the SLC funds. Mr Minister please stop this practice.

WELL SAID MR MINISTER why is our government encouraging corrupt parlimentarians to waste our money

    Sambo Thursday, 06 July 2023 01:07 PM

The SLC is over staffed with officials who draws fat salaries and do nothing. Have pity on those 11 platy's who toil in the sun.

    First /Business Class Thursday, 06 July 2023 01:09 PM

If at all for any compulsory travelling the Business class should be limited to two or three top officials

The feudal mentality at work. Sadly a vast majority of people in powerful positions in Sri Lanka expect such perks. Happy to see the minister willing to crack down on this. Having said that, it must also be said that SLC does make a profit due to the popularity of cricket in SL and hence isn't wasting public money. That said, a waste is a waste whoever's money it is.

Even though that we don't have the best officials at SLC it's still better if politics keep out of sports. As politicians are even worse bandits than SLC officials. The minister has no knowledge about sports and his advisors knowledge is antiquated.

    Jamis Friday, 07 July 2023 12:30 AM

Same thing applies to Ministers as well. It is not limited to SLC. Officials, ministers and their henchmen travel abroad for nothing. It brings no tangible benefits to the country at all, zero, zilch.
