School teacher arrested over brutal assault on schoolgirl

A 49-year old schoolteacher of the Dutugemunu Maha Vidyalaya in Hungama was arrested for mercilessly punishing a 10-year-old child studying in grade 5.

Police said the the schoolgirl's mother lodged a complaint with the Hungama police over the assault.

During the investigation, it was revealed that the girl was injured on the back of her head.

She is currently receiving treatment at the Tangalle Base Hospital and a medical report is scheduled to be presented to the forensic medical officer of the hospital.

The schoolteacher was arrested and remanded until November 14 by the Angunukolapelessa Magistrate.

Hungama Police are conducting further investigations.

My heart goes out to the little girl and her mother. If there is any way to send the girl a gift to comfort her and help her heal from this trauma please publish that information. I hope this teacher gets the punishment she deserves. Put her away in jail until retirement age and ban her from having any contact with children. This teacher may have abused many other students whose family were afraid to speak up due to retaliation. It is a good idea to start allowing parents to volunteer in the classrooms.

How about the father? You not seen the father is the one who finally confronted the wicked government paid employee. Did you also not see the other woman school teacher then defend the abuser too? More of the teachers here are now getting of the same mindset, cover up up fellow abusers, just like thugs working together in the underworld. Government to blame for the poor culture!

@Dilshan Perera If school teacher cause injury to student, they need to be jailed. Doesn't matter about student, it is how the government paid so-called teacher behaves. It's people like you, with blaming the child, even instances of sexually abused that keeps us in pathetic backwards, like how Europe was 1000 years ago during Europe's dark ages/middle ages.

Deplorable. Seeing a lot about harms being done by teachers to Year 5 students in the last month. When will the education system be reformed so teachers aren't as aggressive with being strict.

We have seen a few incidents in the recent past teachers assaulting students with intention of punishing. To stop this a psychological Counselling training must be made a precondition before appointment. Those who are already in employment the employers must ASAP provide that training free of charge. Such courses must be made compulsory as repeats if not every year at least every two years

Looks like there are many followers of the Johsef Stalin thug culture. I hope that the Teachers Union does not launch a protest march for the arrests Teachers specifically government ones have miserably failed in delivering what they are expected to deliver. This has paved the way to a massive private tuition culture where students actually learn something. So basically, the education is not free in Sri Lanka.

Hello, the video shows how the father as involved too. He took on to confront the teacher, and then took on the dare to go to he police. Father also put to teacher, how would he like it if the abused child's father had instead attacked the teacher's daughter who was of the same age too. The abuse by the school teacher had been going on a lot longer and a lot worse than the text in the article makes out. Last found injury was the caning to back, parents cut hair of the girl to prevent continued her being pulled by the hair to no avail. The woman principal/second teacher then denying the happening shows the traditional cover up by school teachers working together to hide their crimes against children. That person too must be punished, or put out teaching/being in charge of children.

It was so pathetic to know that the victim's father called the CRIMINAL who TORTURED the STUDENT as SIR, it was wrong calling that BUGGER OF HOOT as SIR. Justice System must prove that the JUSTICE SYSTEM in Sri Lanka is meaningful by giving that RUDE RASCAL called as Teacher an utmost SENTENCE of RIGOROUS IMPRISONMENT with compensation for the VICTIM at least two-million while cancelling his pension.
