President Ranil Wickremesinghe has instructed the Agriculture, Wildlife and Forest Resources Conservation, Minister Mahinda Amaraweera to look for suitable land for setting up a 1000-acre safari sanctuary in the Northern Province.

At present, no separate safari sanctuary has been established in the Northern Province.

Most of the sanctuaries and zoos are located in other parts of the country. So the people of the 05 districts of the Northern Province have to come to visit the zoos in the south.

Minister Amaraweera in turn has directed the Ministry Secretary as well as the Wildlife Director General and the Forest Resources Department Director General to look into suitable land for the new safari sanctuary to be established in the Northern Province.

The Minister also informed that the possibility of introducing certain species of animals that are present in the national zoos as well as the species that are currently spread in urban areas and are harmful to people's gardens to this park should also be investigated.

Meanwhile, Minister Amaraweera advised the Wildlife Director General to strictly implement the instructions given by the President and not to take steps to temporarily allow private vehicles into the Yala National Park.

The Minister also mentioned that local and foreign tourists going to Yala National Park can use the safari vehicles there on a rental basis. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)

This is a good idea for the people from North-East, Anuradhapura, etc. But, this is not the ideal time to invest when the country is bankrupted and people are struggling to meet ends needs. The government needs to prioritize the agricultural sector, including the supply of fertilizers, technical know-how, water supply, etc., which can give self-sufficient and save valuable foreign exchange spent on the Import of food items.

The President must not get his priorities mixed up. Now is a time to find the money to survive, not to be spending on extravagant projects. The zoo can wait till we stand up on our own feet. .

Well, any establishment in the North or East giving employment to Tamils is most welcome.

This is a good suggestion the north has vast amounts of land that are unsuitable for cultivation. Will also create new jobs in the region

Jolly good idea. We can put all our politicians in cages and display them. They are worse than animals

Now president wants to fool Tamil community abroad and ask them to come invest ...Be honest Tamils will come and invest in Sri Lanka as and when you respectfully treat them as an Equal citizens of this country. 1) Northern express way should have been build instead of South express way...logics is more people would have used it than southern express way ... 2) Pallay Airport must have upgraded to the international standards instead of Mattala airport..logics about this claim is that we could have more customers in North due it's close connection with South Indians. Many international travelers of South Indians may have used it to travel from Europe if only we have updated Pallay instead of Mattala airport 3) we should build an international cricket stadium in Jaffa so that we could create more tourism in that part of the island 4) Historical places and natural resources of the Northern beaches and forest must be protected and upgraded to promote tourism. Ranil had some good ideas.

Let see when Jaffna airport going to be opened to international standards equal or even better than BIA. Will it happen? I bet it will not. Why? You all know the reasons better than me.

Another one of RWs red herrings. Just throwing around fantasy stories for his faithful to claim how brainy this man is. We've seen a few in the past - e.g. the volks wagon factory and more recently Disney land in SL! We clearly don't have the funds for this type of project right now. This is just meat for the gullible.
