SLS certification mandatory for sanitary napkins from October 8

Colombo, July 19 (Daily Mirror) - The sale of sanitary napkins that do not carry the required Sri Lanka Standards Institution (SLSI) certification will be prohibited in Sri Lanka from October 8, 2026, under an Extraordinary Gazette notification issued by the Consumer Affairs Authority.

The order, issued under the signature of Acting Consumer Affairs Authority Chairman S. M. D. Suriyakumara, applies to both locally manufactured and imported single-use sanitary napkins and ultra-thin or slim sanitary napkins.

Accordingly, the manufacture, packaging, distribution, transportation, storage, sale and display for sale of sanitary napkins that do not meet the required SLS standards will be prohibited from the effective date.

The regulation applies to single-use sanitary napkins covered by SLS 1732 and single-use ultra-thin or slim sanitary napkins covered by SLS 1748.

Imported sanitary napkins covered by the relevant standards will also be required to undergo inspection and receive approval under the Import Inspection Scheme operated by the Sri Lanka Standards Institution before being sold in the local market.
