Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) appears to be divided after media reports that President Ranil Wickremesinghe will contest for presidency at the next election scheduled for next year.
According to informed sources, the president has indicated that he will contest next time.
After such media reports emerged, State Minister of Investment Promotion Dilum Amunugama who is an SLPP MP said we would definitely support the president if he contests.
The president is from the United National Party (UNP). However, SLPP General Secretary MP Sagara Kariyawasam said his party’s National Organizer Basil Rajapaksa would be the ideal candidate of his party to contest the presidential election.
Inside political sources said the SLPP MPS who hold various portfolios in the government are behind the president whereas some others of the party remain loyal to Mr. Basil Rajapaksa. Earlier, SLPP MP Prof. Ranjith Bandara who is a loyalist of Mr. Rajapaksa said the party would get a new leadership after the festival season.
The party is headed by former President Mahinda Rajapaksa at the moment.

Ranil is much more cleaver than any one else in the race for this Presidential office .He knows that well..neither Sajith not Basil can complete him in his quality; skills ; knowledge and experience and personality..Only AKD can but still he got his limit and limitations..Ranil knows all this and it would be naive if he doesn't compete next election...luck is on his side ..Now he can send all MPs home and call for both elections..MPs know MR and co have don't any power even through they SLPP is the majority and the power of majority doesn't mean anything right now as executive president has all power above them ..Now MR and co must obey him and listen...if they don't do Ranil will use his power as and when he want to ..we is Politically matured than anyone

Any party member that genuinely believes that a Rajapakse should run for high office again after witnessing the people's reaction and response to them need to get their head examined. They may be able to thrown around illgotten monies but they have lost the hearts and support if the people. Some may want to bury the head in the sand, others may be subservient and too far compromised to acknowledge the reality . May be the only wake up for them would be to run one of them and see the results. It sure won't be pretty. The fact is that they pushed their luck too far and are now a lost and obsolete brand. They long lost their political moju.

Now the only way to get more support for RANIL from SLPP members is to to give Ministerial or State Ministerial Portfolios to them.

Nonsense, how can Basil run for President? He has always said he will never give up his USA Citizenship and how can a foreigner become a Sri Lankan Presidential Candidate? Do you think people will buy this kind of crap? Some of you politicians still think you can fool the people. Like it or not President Ranil will be elected as President, and people are silently observing his services. Politicians need to worry about themselves The JVP becoming the main opposition is no doubt,, they will also ditch their allies when and if they take control of governance and you can't blame them, it won't be possible to have an alliance with any group who has contrary views clashing with their ideology.

A split in the SLPP over possible presidential candidates for the elections is always good for Sri Lanka! Both Ranil and Basil are candidates of the past Rajapaksa era who have left the country in a disastrous state and are now promising 'prosperity and prosperity' for the future for electoral reasons! Both politicians are, each in their own specific way, failed politicians and their political models of a better future are promises of salvation that will not be realized if the current social and structural conditions are largely maintained! The ongoing tensions and tendencies towards division within the SLPP promise the opposition parties high chances of winning, if they act as a unit and with a convincing personal claim to leadership!

At the next Presidential Election, anyone who genuinely promises the people to recover all robbed money and punish the culprits will be the winner. However mere promises won't do as people now know the character of the prospective contestants.
