The Sri Lanka Foreign Employment Bureau (SLFEB) has temporarily halted the registration of women who acquire private visas for untrained and domestic employment in Oman and the UAE.

A circular in this regard was issued by SLBFE Chairman Mahendra Kimarasinghe today.

Accordingly, the SLBFE has decided to discontinue the process of registering female domestic workers and low skilled female workers who are leaving for foreign employment on a self-employed basis to apply for a visit visa to the UAE and Oman with immediate effect.

SLBFE also requested to advise such female domestic assistants and other low-skilled workers to obtain their foreign employment through a license on a foreign employment basis.

It was also stated that the decision will not apply to re-entry workers.

Other rules and regulations speculated in the circular with regards to the SLBFE registration of migrant workers on a self-employed basis will remain unchanged, the chairman said. (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)

Nonsense as always. First arrange and maintain your foreign missions

I thought it was the foreign country's job to give visa or not, not SLBFE. Is SLBFE now giving visas to women? Strange indeed! SLBFE should ask these women who is sending them to those countries and get a bond from those agents and use that bond to bring the stranded women back to SL.

When you compare housemaids from the Phillipines for instance, the Sri Lankan maids come through as very prideful and unprofessional. They need to be trained that it will be a humbling experience when they go to a new country for work. Most housemaids are poor and illiterate from any country. But Lankans think too big of working abroad without considering that a house maid job functions in middle east is different to working in Colombo. This causes problems for them along with being home sick and missing the laid back island life. Give them a proper training including psychological counseling and confidence in managing upscale homes.

Desert Arabs think Sri Lanka is a nation of Labourers and House Maids. It is a shame to all middle class Sri Lankans.

SLFEB should not become just piece of shit in the middle of Cake. Immediately trained the housemaids and let them go before anyone takes the gun to clean the SLFEB.
