SLC responds on hiring new lawyer for Dhanushka

In the wake of a statement by former Legal Head of the SLC Chanaka Senaratna that Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has hired an attorney-at-law to represent cricketer Dhanushka Gunathilake, the SLC said today that it has not authorized or retained any lawyers in Sri Lanka to represent or make any kind of statement representing SLC or cricketer Danushka Gunathilaka.

"It is observed that some of the recent public statements made by a lawyer pertaining to Danushka Gunathilaka give an impression that the said lawyer is speaking for and on behalf of Sri Lanka Cricket," the SLC said in a statement.

Chanaka Senaratna said yesterday that the Sri Lanka Cricket has hired an attorney-at-law to represent Sri Lankan cricketer Dhanushka Gunathilake who was arrested over rape charges in Sydney, Australia.

He told media that lawyer Ananda Amaranath who was handling Dhanushka's case was removed from the case and another lawyer was hired by the SLC from today to continue the case after the SLC decided to pay legal fees on behalf of Gunathilaka.

"Therefore, Sri Lanka Cricket holds no responsibility over such statements or the veracity of such statements made by the said lawyer," the SLC said.

To get qualified to study Law in Australia, the cut-off year-12 marks is higher than to study Medicine. The brightest students get into law. There's absolutely no chance that a local Sri Lankan lawyer could compete with Aussie lawyers. You would have to choose a good lawyer from Australia if you want increase the chances of proving Gunathilaka is innocent.

SL Attorneys at law can't practice in Australia as all Australian lawyers are Aus university graduates and barristers, unlike OL passed SL Law College graduates. One thing is for sure. Even this cticketer will get a fair hearing in Australia. In Australia, there are no jokers, corrupt politicians and police like in SL. That's why these countries are called developed countries. They are developed in every sense. SL has a long way to go, not sure it will ever get there.

This court case will cost SRC at least A$100,000. I think it is okay for SRC to shoulder the expenses. But, if Danushka looses the case then, he should reimburse the expenses .

It was known from newspaper reports that SLC sent a Manager and a team of officials to oversee the SL Cricketers during the T20 World Cup held in Australia. In addition, according to a spokesman for SLC, the entire Executive Committee too was in Australia presumably to watch the matches. Then how come all these personnel could not prevent one of the serial offenders from leaving the hotel and getting into trouble? Cricketers who do not play in a particular match should also be available to act as a runner for an injured batsman or be a substitute fielder if a fielder gets injured during the match. What were the Executive Committee members of the SLC and the team of officials doing?

This is primarily the fault of low standard contracts or vague contracts SLC have in place with players. There should be specific clauses in place that limit the SLC’s liability if a player decided to use it in an immoral manner or that is beyond the scope of a cricket player. I’m not even entertaining the responses here by some idiots who say that this guy should be defended even if proven as a rapist just because he’s a srilankan. Clearly shows the underdeveloped thought process of some lankans. Also, the pattern of always blaming women? A man or women has right to have fun and to give or refuse consent to sexual encounters. In an under developed lankan brain, a man who wants to sleep around is normal but a woman who wants to do the same is wrong and the stigma is that she’s an easy woman. It is true the said person is innocent until proven guilty, however if proven guilty. However, if proven guilty the litigation costs should be recovered and sued for breach of contract.
