Sri Lanka on Thursday abstained as the UN General Assembly voted to adopt a resolution condemning Russia's "attempted illegal annexations" of the four Ukrainian regions following a “referendum”.

The resolution, which declared that “attempted illegal annexation” of the regions of Donetsk, Kherson, Luhansk and Zaporizhzhia in Ukraine have no validity under international law, was adopted by a 143-5 vote in the 193-member General Assembly. Thirty-five countries, including Sri Lanka, India, China and Pakistan abstained.

The UNSC could not adopt the resolution as Russia — a permanent member of the UN Security Council — vetoed it.

In an explanation of the country’s vote, India’s permanent representative to the UN, Ruchira Kamboj, said the country’s decision to abstain was “consistent with our well-thought-out national position”. There are also “other pressing issues” at play and some of them have not been adequately addressed in the resolution, she said.

“My prime minister has said unequivocally that this cannot be an era of war. With this firm resolve to strive for a peaceful solution through dialogue and diplomacy, India has decided to abstain,” she said, referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s message to Russian President Vladimir Putin during a meeting in Samarkand on September 16.

India not strong enough to invade and hold our country. Their own various different ethnic group like in Punjab want separate country enough. Tamil Nadu would not want to have the Tamil people in North and East with them, and they have forgotten the persons of upcountry too while lamenting about the North and East persons. Just because problem happening in Europe doesn't mean big, but not so smart India can do anything long term with invading us. They can't even export quality medicines overseas, and causing deaths of children in Gambia.

This India is a useless country, with no backbone. At least China has one stand. India is a cunning and never has a stand in international affairs. They'd be better off first concentrating on building some toilets to those millions before talking about UN resolutions and get involved in international affairs. Long way to go!.

Will we abstain say in hundred years in a failed impoverished poverty and conflict ridden Lanka India moves to annex areas using language and ethnic grounds similar to what Russia has just done. Or maybe we will be like Fiji which invited the British to take over to protect from intimidation from the US we do the same out of desperation inviting India the superpower to rescue our starving failed paradise where our pandered and failed monks are unable to invoke Buddha’s blessings of abundance etc

Nimal Thanks a lot for your concern about how some Indians shit. Keep thinking about how neighbors shit.

Randula Jayamaha Thursday, 13 October 2022 02:17 PM

@Time waster. Look forward to finding you don't shit anymore. It'll mean the world will be down one less oxygen waster.

Gutless. Would have voted for Hitler if he had tourists to send. Must choose between good and evil and we sat on the fence unlike 143 countries with a sense of decency.

Sri lanka has a history of choosing always bad sides that is the reason it has gone to the junk yard. There is a proverb "Tell us who are your friends then we will tell you whom you are"

Abstain. Abstain. Abstain. When a neighbour annexes part of its neighbourhood, that's invasion. What Russia did was no different to China annexing Tibet and has its sight on several islands in phillippines right now, not to mention those in SL.. Yet, Sri Lanka has the audacity to expect countries to vote against UNHRC resolution at Geneva when it doesn't have the guts to stand by injustice and rather resort to the easy escape route.

Sri Lankan educated in India Thursday, 13 October 2022 01:30 PM

@ nimal -Please don’t dream about India being useless. It is a sub continent. It makes sewing needle to aircrafts. It has the very richest and the poor. It can walk over SL in less than 24 hours. Thankful for helping us out. Don’t hang on to toilets.!! You are like sour grapes. Why not go to any state in India and see for yourself. You will change your attitude towards India.

Randula Jayamaha Thursday, 13 October 2022 02:23 PM

If you at all time laud Indians as your master you do that 'educated in India'. You are biased because your qualification is from India... Most people know Sri Lankan who can't get into university course because of lack of marks here go to India to do the same. Going to the west for education is far superior than going to India for undergraduate studies.

I’m happy to see that Sri Lanka took a neutral position on this issue in spite of the likely pressure from those Western nations. Why should SLK support them. The conflict in Ukraine doesn’t affect the core interests of SLK.

    Lokka Thursday, 13 October 2022 04:17 PM

Sri Lanka shoul have been on the Russian side supporting them and voted against the resolution. Ukraine always voted against us at the UNHCR.

    L De Silva Thursday, 13 October 2022 06:54 PM

Well done SL!! Russia has always been a true loyal and steadfast friend of Lanka throughout the decades!!

    Buddhist Thursday, 13 October 2022 07:35 PM

Does this mean India can one-day annex Sri Lanka to its landmass as SL has abstained in support of Russia?

    Joseph Friday, 14 October 2022 09:43 AM

It's naïve to expect SL to vote in favour when Russia voted against the UNCHR resolution on SL
