While calling the election commission to declare the local government election by the end of this month, the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) today hinted that it is in the process of forming an alliance with several parties.

SJB General Secretary Ranjith Madduma Bandara came out with this remark at a media conference in response to a question raised by the journalists as to whether his party intends forming an alliance with the SLFP.

“We are conferring with a number of political parties to form an alliance,” Maduma Bandara said without ruling out an SJB SLFP alliance.

“The Election Commission has said that the local government election should be called by the end of this month if it is holding the local government elections before February 20. Therefore, we call upon the commission to declare the local government election immediately,” he added.

“Election commission can act independently and it does not have to seek President’s permission to declare an election.

Asked about the recent remakes made by UNP General Secretary Palitha Range Bandara that a presidential election would come first, Madduma Bandara said such an event is not possible according to the constitution. “Parliament should be dissolved in March in that case so that a general election could be held,” he said. SL will be doomed if SJB, UNP and SLPP form an alliance. It would be the same cake and icing, just the mixed fruit flavor.

But what the subversives do? They are less than 3%

    Lion Wednesday, 21 December 2022 04:42 PM

No wonder the same type of scenario is taking place ,which we have seen in the similar situations in this country. SJB and SLFP could easily form a coalition as both parties consist of betrayers , rouges and. Blood sucking parasites.

I think that SJB and JVP should join hand in hand without SLFP...SLFP doesn't have any vote bank now ..JVP got more than SLFP and I think SJB has and SLPP have more vote bank ...it is JVP who hold the balance of power in any election now...Both SLPP and SLFP have lost their creditability now ...UNP has already gone down as well ...one thing is sure that the country needs an honest leader and leadership

How do you know? Are you Sinhalese?

    William Wednesday, 21 December 2022 05:00 PM

Proves beyond doubt that no SINGLE party is strong enough to win any election on its own. Hath havula is always disastrous - one little grump here or there and the havulas start cracking up at the seam. SL needs just three parties - two major ones to govern alternatively and one as a middle man. Wishful thinking!

The 'Economic Armegedon' is getting together with 'Political Armegedon'. Only the 'Subversives' are missing!

    Ranil Wednesday, 21 December 2022 05:15 PM

JVP ta Jayawewa. The 1st time I will vote for JVP. It’s the people that count. Not the party.

Tak Tik Tuk Thursday, 22 December 2022 10:01 AM

Same here... lets give JVP a chance to walk the talk...

What we know is who guide whom. Rest everyone will understand.

Bernard Jayatilake Wednesday, 21 December 2022 06:56 PM

Forming an alliance with the SLFP would be a political suicide as its leader's image is tarnished with the Easter Sunday attack.

Hector Perera Wednesday, 21 December 2022 08:00 PM

It is utter disgusting in Srilankan politics that every one of them are talking broader alliances but doesn't have a spine to stand alone and get the people to their side. The reason is the preferential voting system. They know when they collects few thousand votes around the country, they will get at least one seat. Secondly, they all lie to the people and once they get into power, they act the same. That is why the voting system to be amended. In 1986 J.R won 5/6th fighting UNP alone with the others.

Anything but the JVP please. They are delusional lunatics

Volker Metzger Wednesday, 21 December 2022 08:27 PM

If the old parties, which drove the country into the abyss, would regain power through an alliance with the SJB, it would be a catastrophe, a meltdown, for Sri Lanka and its people!!! The country can only be "saved" by the best in politics and business! This is to be understood above all in the sense of a spiritual and moral renewal! I am also thinking of overcoming the ethnological problems and difficulties that have persisted for so long! A suprapartisan solution must be found here in the national interest!!!

Pantha Kumaran Wednesday, 21 December 2022 11:28 PM

UNP and SLPP joining hands. SJB and SLFP joining hands. This clearly shows our politicians have one agenda and that is to make money for themselves. There is no future to our country.

Bernard Jayatilake Thursday, 22 December 2022 12:12 AM

In a situation where the SLFP vote base has diminished and it will never regroup as a dominant force in SL politics, it would be naive for the largest opposition party to form an alliance with them only to lose their sympathisers as the treacherous SLFP contested the last election under the cover of nepotism-based SLPP.

    Wijebahu Thursday, 22 December 2022 02:48 AM

Whether people like it or not SJB is the best out of all options available to SL voters definitely not Ranil pohottu alliance. JVP has a cult following and should never be hand over the complete power of this country. I don’t think they have completely given up their violent past. If JVP is given power end of freedom and expect a North Korean style regime. Best u can expect is Cuba style regime.

    L Jaya Thursday, 22 December 2022 05:21 AM

I think all opposition parties with no black marks to their political career should join to defeat SLPP-UNP alliance. At this juncture opposites should carefully consider to form a joint corruption free alliance.

RW never had a proper chance to implement his programs. All his previous terms were under a executive president who held the power

Yasas Perera Thursday, 22 December 2022 07:44 AM

The headline is so misleading. There is no mention of a SLFP-SJB alliance in the news item. Madduma Bandara was asked about an alliance with the SLFP but he only has only said the SJB is talking to all parties. Why does the Daily Mirror have to twist facts in the headline? Is it because it is owned by the President's uncle?

    Ranjith Thursday, 22 December 2022 07:45 AM

No need of alliances SJB can win the elections SJB is strong enough to win any elections only donkeys will vote for JVP and UNP

    Mithun Thursday, 22 December 2022 09:40 AM

You can make whatever the coalition but we will form NPP Gov this time.

    Sambo Thursday, 22 December 2022 10:23 AM

These days every party is forming alliances and even they don't know where they belong and do you want the public to be a stepping stone each time they want to change parties. Better stay with the JVP. One party one colour.

SJB supporter Thursday, 22 December 2022 10:43 AM

If this Alliance takes place, we supporters .are ready to leave the SJB.

Unity of all good and skillful persons will make Sri Lanka good. So, nothing wrong, even at this late stage.

    Citizen k Thursday, 22 December 2022 11:41 AM

Let every party stand alone . Alliance's have all been a disaster. Please don't ever dream of forming alliances of parties that have lost their credibility.I can see only SJB having well educated and politically savvy members.Having JVP as opposition and the Tamil speaking alliance is important as the need of the hour is to empower the country from village level and develop that particular area's bountiful product. We do not need mega structures or statues to satisfy any one's ego.
