Sri Lanka has reached a deal with Russian nuclear giant Rosatom to build a nuclear power plant that may run two reactors and generate 300 megawatts of energy, the Sri Lankan ambassador in Russia said Wednesday.

"We will go for a nuclear power plant … There are options actually … two sources, 300 megawatts," Janitha Abeywickrema Liyanage told Sputnik on the sidelines of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.

The ambassador said that having its own power plant would allow the Indian Ocean island nation to overcome the energy crisis. The government will speed up the approval process to begin construction in the near future.

"There is a proposal and there is approval to follow the procedures from the Sri Lankan cabinet, and the International Atomic Energy Agency is also now looking at it, and they have set up certain working groups. Rosatom has set up four working groups in four different areas," she said.

Remember Chernobyl for which the Russians were directly responsible and Fukuoma. Germany, although it is a tech savvy nation is facing out its nuclear power plants. My advice to Sri Lankana. Do not build any nuclear power plants. They are too dangerous. Besides, where are we going to dump the nuclear waste.

Are we going to go on with just hydro, solar and wind power? Then please don't ask to develop the country because without cheap energy there will no industrialisation.

There is no deal just a proposal and if this goes ahead USA will organize another aragalaya and bring down this regime as well. So let's come back to reality and build some coal power plants that can stabilize the electricity generation shall we?

    Reza Thursday, 15 June 2023 11:48 AM

Yeah right. India will not allow it and Sri Lanka being such a tiny island imagine if something goes wrong with the plant.

These are all dreams and under this political set up we are often taken to dream lands and finally left with a country which is totally bankrupt.

Mahendra Fernando Thursday, 15 June 2023 01:12 PM

We can't even properly maintain the coal power plant without it breaking down every six months. Imagine a nuclear plant now.

    Hawkeye Thursday, 15 June 2023 01:31 PM

Reza, for your information, at present there are 22 nuclear reactors with a total capacity of 6780 MW in operation in India. 5 of these reactors, including India's largest reactor, are in Tamil Nadu ! And India won't allow us to have a reactor ? For God's sake ... get your facts straight ... or grow up. Preferably both.

India will not allow Sri Lanka possessing its own nuclear plant, not because of safety but because of security. If Sri Lanka is allowed to do so then within twenty years Sri Lanka will be a nuclear power and India will not be able to dictate to Sri Lanka.

It will give new meaning to: “glow in the dark”.

Mildred Wanigaselera Thursday, 15 June 2023 02:47 PM

Only a Meeharakka in government could think of this idea.

    Sivalingam Thursday, 15 June 2023 02:57 PM

Toxic waste could be dumped among the leeches of Diyawannawa.

Avery Markham Thursday, 15 June 2023 02:58 PM

Mega Commis for a few people.

    Nish Thursday, 15 June 2023 03:33 PM

This is why Sri Lanka cannot be developed. When ever something is done you go on create opposition to it claiming komis. But when the country falls flat you go and organize aragalayas. Next time do the aragalaya on yourself.

All these SL's who are getting excited-sometime back when India built it's nuclear power plant in TN, SL's were all up in arms shouting about SL's security. Now what are you guys getting excited. In any case SL is incapable of building it themselves unlike the Indians

nuclear plant is much better than the negative people.

    Praba Thursday, 15 June 2023 04:41 PM

@ Nish, the guy doing all the anti Sri Lankan comments on a 24/7 is a dirty Indian Estate Tamil Christian , now 70 years old, and living in Canada and pretends to be a Jaffna Tamil like his first cousin Summanthiran MP.

    TinTin Thursday, 15 June 2023 06:26 PM

@Sunil 1. Its Fukushima not Fukuoma. 2. There was an article just a couple of months back explaining how this was going to be a offshore ship based plant and the nuclear waste was going to taken back to Russia for long term storage. Its not the politicians, Its people like you who have no sense to do research and learn more about what they are taking but a opinionated and have this type of saloon/tea kade comments are the main culprits ruining the country for 70 years How did Corona miss to take you whilst too many nice people died.

The geniuses in this government are inviting further disaster, when we couldn't even handle Tsunami, X-press pearl disaster etc. in the past.

When there is so much of Solar power to be harnessed, why opt for a disastarous solution? As usual the commissions must be lucrative.

Nadi Karunaratne Thursday, 15 June 2023 09:08 PM

Matches? Children? Why are we even contemplating doing business with a regime that slaughters civilians, invades a sovereign state and imprisons or kills those who dissent.

    Jamis Thursday, 15 June 2023 11:30 PM

Amazing to see the number of ignorants on this site. Nuclear power is very much part of the future and the Russians have got some of the best technologies in the world. Safety is of course always an issue. But this new technology is very different from the old. There are plenty of safeguards. I hope this will go ahead.

Sri Lanka does not need nuclear power stations. Russia is geographically the biggest country in the world, they can afford to have nuclear disasters; further they do not care about the well being of their citizens who are sent in droves to the meat grinder in its invasion of Ukraine. Sri lanka is blessed with natural elements in abundance to generate clean green energy and should stick to it.

There is always some thing in the air for people to talk about.... soon or later there will be Aliens in Galle Face..... this can be done only by a Cunning Fox, thank God Sri Lanka is blessed with one.....

The Liberal One and Coal Power Coal power plants to power factories that produce textiles and garments exported to the west? This represents over 40% of SL’s total exports. Also, coal power plants to supply electricity to hotels that host tourists seeking to enjoy a tropical paradise? Have you heard of the term ‘green credentials’? Exporters of textiles and garments will have to be compliant with guidelines for consumer exports to the west or face tariff barriers. As for the tourist industry, environmentally friendly and ‘green’ is a marketing slogan.
