A red alert on thundershowers accompanied by severe lightning has been issued to eight districts, the Department of Meteorology said today.
Accordingly, thundershowers accompanied by severe lightning are likely in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, Central, Uva and North-Western provinces.
They said a fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 75mm could be expected at some places in Sabaragamuwa Province and in Kalutara, Nuwara-Eliya, Galle and Matara districts.
There would be also gusty winds during thundershowers, they said.
Accordingly, the nine districts, including Gampaha, Kegalla, Colombo, Nuwara Eliya, Kalutara, Ratnapura, Galle and Matara have been alerted with weather conditions.
The general public are strongly advised to take adequate precautionary measures to safeguard themselves from possible damage caused by lightning and squall. (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)
