Power and Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekera said that the QR code system introduced under the National Fuel Pass portal would be canceled in three to four months and the country would be able to provide fuel continuously under normal conditions.

Speaking on a TV program, Kanchana emphasized that the QR code was introduced as a temporary solution for fuel management.

He mentioned that the fuel price would not increase.

"According to the international fuel price, the local fuel price may rise by Rs. 10 or Rs. 15, but I do not know what will happen if a similar situation occurs as in Ukraine or if the international fuel price rises at a faster rate," Minister Wijesekera said.

With the removal of the QR code, the ministry said it had invited international suppliers under the reorganization process to arrive in the country.

"We only have the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) and Lanka IOC (LIOC) as the main fuel suppliers in the country," Kanchana said.

Finally, he mentioned that the ministry is going to reorganize the system.

The refueling process for vehicles as per the QR code system along with the last digit of the vehicle's registration number will commence on July 25, 2022.

After addressing the initial technical flaws, the new system was successfully tested in filling stations across the country. (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)

SLFP nationalised and got rid of the 3 oil companies at the time. Now same party and people with a name change wants companies to come back. What a joke.

It is sad that Government realized, after seven decades that it cannot rule the country AND indulge in business at the same time. During this period, several people have fattened their pockets. How long will it take to separate balance state owned enterprises from the Treasury control?
