An investigation has been launched by the Police after a three-wheel driver of an app-based taxi service had been threatened by a group of thugs in a locality in Galle for transporting tourists.

The Tourist Police said the incident was reported yesterday following a video of the incident going viral on Social Media.

"However, we did not receive any formal Police complaint regarding the incident. But the Tourist Police have decided to launch an investigation as foreigners are involved," the Tourist Police Division said.

The video showed three men stopping the three-wheeler and threatening the taxi driver not to pick up tourists from their area. It also shows the men abusing the taxi driver verbally with one of them peering into the three-wheeler and warning the driver not to take anyone from their neighbourhood ever again.

Later, the video showed the driver asking the foreign couple whether they felt uncomfortable. The foreigners seemed confused by the incident.

The driver then explained what had happened and what those men were up to.

However, several people commenting on the video were of the opinion that these people should be severely dealt with and that the three-wheel mafia should not be allowed to harass tourists visiting Sri Lanka.

“Tourists should be free to book a taxi. If this continues and you don’t talk, then you cannot promote tourism,” one comment said. (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)

I am a Brazilian tourist, almost travelled all parts of Sri Lanka, often took tuktuks and trains, the behavior of the tuktuk drivers are unacceptable, certain places they threaten us to come in their tuk tuks and some other places they demand more than the usual rates, when travelling in the north no much harrasment, in the down south Matara and beyond its freighting

My advice to anyone visiting SL from overseas is to never ride in roadside 3 wheelers. Preferably stick to an app based one if they really want to experience the dangerous mode of transport. Unless of course if they are into vice or something illegal (they can use the services of those parked near hotels or at junctions) which they can do at their own risk and with no help from anyone!

These crooks will loose tourism very soon and there will not be left any Kevun for them to become Yodayas. They will simply end up as Ghoo kanna Bhootayas.

These are criminals who must be severely punished for the threats. On Beach Road in Negombo, these 3-wheeler criminals even threaten bus drivers not to stop when tourists are waiting at bus stops. These felons should be immediately forbidden to transport people. In addition, every passenger transport without turning on the taximeter would have to be severely punished. Use should also be made of the option to confiscate the vehicles until the court hearing.

These things happens since those thugs are henchmen of local politicians against whom Police do not take any action. This is an evidence for breakdown of law and order as a whole

Thugs have no place in society, the driving licence of these thugs must be revoked

This has been going on for some time. Airport taxi mafia, 3Wheel mafia, fake tourist guides will do no good for TOURISM. Authorities very well know the issue but keep a blind eye or disregard complaints.

This is the norm in every tourist destination. Negomb, Galle, Hikkaduwa, Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa if a Uber or Pick me is booked those trishaw drivers will be threatened by the local operators.

After the import of three-wheelers to this country a new mafia has emerged throughout the country and its tantakles has begun to spread even to the day-to -day lives of the people negatively threatening the economy and this trend smacks of political patronage.

Because these are tourists the matter is getting reported. We locals face these situations all the time. Most three wheel drivers are a totally different breed of lazy thugs who just want quick money. Well before the fuel crisis a three wheel driver had asked Rs.4500 to take a tourist from Galle Face Hotel to Odel

Typical Rajapaksha supporters. These types park their 3 wheelers outside Cinnamon Grand and fleece the tourist. Most are in a uniform of their own in shoes etc. carrying Rajapaksha's photos in the three wheel and in their purse. Dirty Rajapaksha worshippers

Not only tourists, even locals must be free to find their own mode of transport. Law enforcement officers must ensure that action taken in this case is a deterrent to all other trishaw drivers.
