Although the maximum number of inmates that can be held in the prisons across the island is about 13,200, the prisons across the country are currently accommodating twice the maximum capacity, Prisons Department said.
Prisons Spokesman Chandana Ekanayake said that some prisons have exceeded its capacity by 300%.
According to the statistical of the Department, the number of prisoners who are detained over various charges has gradually increased with the beginning of this year and as of November 25, more than 26,000 inmates are being crammed in prisins across the country.
The spokesman said that around 74% of the inmates who were detained last year for drug-related offences.
He said about 38% from the 10,000 inmates detained in the prisons are prisoners while the number of suspects detained in the prisons are 16,000 (68%). *This para is not clear*
The prisoners detained on drug-related charges are 4,600 (34%) while the number of suspects over the same charges is 8,700 (65%).
Ekanayake said that most of the inmates in prison, 62% are suspects.
According to the data, the number of prisoners and suspects detained on drug-related charges has exceeded 50% compared to the total number of inmates.(Darshana Sanjeewa Balasuriya)

Consider if you can reform them and train them in skill and knowledge how much the country could benefit from them ...Non of our justice minister has got any talent and skills how to reform our prison service ..there is no point in locking up people for some small offence and civic offence but you need to have a system to teach them and train them... Introduce financial penalty for some crimes such as traffic and other civil offences And create professional skills development for all prisonors...in this way you create empowerment and skilled professionals.. Our politicians are good in stealing public money not investing in people . Problem is with politics not with these people who are in jail now Most of these drugs are snuggled into this country with the support of politicians according many media report and why not CID investigate on this matter... because they are scared of their jobs

Toller Kommentar Sri.
A big vacuum to be filled Sunday, 27 November 2022 02:35 PM
Yesterday I read a good news, that might help the current situation in Prisons. Anyone caught with 5 (mg) of drugs will be sentenced to death. So, half the population in Prison will be gone very soon. Along with them, Prison guards, vehicles, drivers even superintendents and their families too will vanish. There will be a very big empty vacuum. This may help implement Silva's suggestion. We may need more alugosuwas.

If one compare the Parliament to Prisons it is the same scenario, for a country like ours 60 is max as law makers. We have 225, that too has at least 25 % Law breakers ie. Commis itthas , Drug dealers and addicts, Murderers the list goes on. Difference is they cannot be rehabilitated- Good for nothing scums.

In reality if all those who have committed crimes, frauds, and robbed the country's wealth are charged and convicted, the Prisons accomodation will have to be increased by three or four times.
