There are no plans to increase the prices of bakery items other than decreasing them, and it was further said that the price of a loaf of bread is expected to be reduced to 100 rupees, All Ceylon Bakery Owners' Association (ACBOA) chairman N.K. Jayawardena said.
He said that the support of the government is expected for this and that the bakery industry, which is currently stalled, can be restored only if the prices of bakery products including bread buns are reduced.
A loaf of bread is currently being sold for Rs.150, Rs.160, Rs.170 and in some areas for Rs. 180. He said that the consumer cannot afford those prices which is why the sale of bread buns has decreased by 20 to 25 percent.
Due to the increase in electricity bills, the bakery industry has been heavily impacted, which has led to the collapse of the industry.
Due to the need to maintain the bakery industry, the bakery owners have to bear the burden and due to various problems affecting the bakery industry, 5,000 out of 7,000 bakeries are closed. Jayawardena said. (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)
Citizens not towing the line of the bakery Mafia... Monday, 06 March 2023 06:04 PM
Consumers will force the price of bread to come down by not buying at the over high prices. Even with the electricity price hike the Bakery mafia know they have to reduce prices instead or consumers will just not buy anymore.

Consumers may have found alternative food to supplant!!! Electricity, Flour and other raw material are at the level, they have to be to be sustainable for an efficient government!? Basically subsidies can’t be maintained anymore, which is living beyond one’s means, the basic reason for “BANKRUPTCY”!! Find alternative products to market to the consumers in the mew environment to continue!! That’s the reality in any situation, the right commodity at the right price for the consumer??? Change the approach to suit the new social climate!!! Name of the Game!!! Stagnant with old ideas and you are boungd to go extinct!!! Customer’s buy what they adduce VALUE TO!! INNOVATE!

Although the overall costs have come down, increase it further to around 200/-. If you reduce, you are ruining the election win chances of the subversives and Armegedons!

Truly, this is VALID reason - "Due to the increase in electricity bills, the bakery industry has been heavily impacted, which has led to the collapse of the industry." It is the responsibility of so called Government to tell this to IMF.

I have observed that many items on supermarket shelves remain unsold for weeks. Then what happens is as the expiry date gets closer, the suppliers and supermarket management initiates a 50% promotional discount to get rid of the items. This too is futile to a certain extent as cusumers are very intelligent in choosing what they actually need.
