President Ranil Wickremesinghe is scheduled to leave for Japan on September 26 to attend the funeral of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

Abe was Japan's longest-serving prime minister, holding office from 2006 to 2007 and again from 2012 to 2020 before resigning due to health reasons. He died from excessive bleeding in July at the age of 67 after being shot while giving a public campaign speech.

Sources said the President is scheduled to meet Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and high-level representatives of the Japanese government during his visit to Japan.

The President is also scheduled to travel to the Philippines following his visit to Japan where he will hold talks with Philippines President Bongbong Marcos.

During his visit to the Philippines, the President will attend the Asian Development Bank Governors’ meeting on September 29.

Nihatha Mani Thursday, 22 September 2022 03:59 PM

No wonder this Country is in a mess with comments like this from grasshoppers

    DJ Thursday, 22 September 2022 06:42 PM

Correct and that's why there is a Sri Lanka Ambassador for this. why keep wasting public money. The Japanese government will completely understand.

Very clever thinking one would presume, but not futuristic??!! Where was ANNECUNT when MaRa went to Caribbean with A 340 Plane load of acolytes to see world cup with Cabaal Nivad spending (wasting Tax Payers Money)!!?? Probably hiding under his bed in TT and enjoying presidential cuisine!!? Those were the cause for the declining economic mess and resultant Bankrupts of SL resulting in starvation, lack of Food, Fuel and power Crisis??!! Deep in Slumber or wonder SLEEP mode’ of MaRa disciples and followers, from Gota to every minion in SLPP!!

Ranil always talk about the previous friendship with Japan. He better use his charm there, and make us a good showing in the Philippines. A lot of people tolerating him for the sake of hoping he is more able than others with personal persuasion.

In this day and age, you can simply do a video call and pass condolences and meet as well... those countries would understand that you are cost cutting to save the economy.

    Nihal S Thursday, 22 September 2022 04:41 PM

This is waste of public money, that should be avoided during this difficult time for the country. If you not attended, the Japanese will understand it better than any other nation.

Ranil is behaving as he pleases and no one is questioning him. How can he travel around when the country is in dire straits. If compared to Britain his behaviour not at all in any way similar to over scrutinised and suffering British politicians, but it has striking similarity to the royal family who live luxuriously in tax payers money and travel around with no one daring to ask any questions while millions of British people specially in the poor north live in poverty.

Keep up your foreign jaunts at poor man's expense - a great way to show the common man how to tighten his belts while RW a political chameleon who came via the backdoor enjoys life.

Japan and the late Prime Minister Shinzo Abe gave been great friends of Sri Lanka. Most recently they offered us the LRT system funded on a long term basis at almost no interest cost. They have given us many grants and low cost funding projects. Japan is currently playing a critical role in our foreign debt restructuring. Most likely there would be side discussions with current Prime Minister Fumio Kishida too. This is a must do visit at this point in time. Look forward to his arrival in Japan.

If it is possible, it is a good opportunity for Mr. president to meet former and current global leaders at the event in Japan.

Mishan. Fernando Thursday, 22 September 2022 05:59 PM

Totally agree that he could sign the book of condolences witout going but it is likely he wants to go abroad as much as possible on State money. Hope we can all attend his funeral soon

This President is good at attending functions overseas.

    C Fernando Thursday, 22 September 2022 06:53 PM

Started the globetrotting ..First the Queen's funeral, now this. Wasting the precious foreign exchange of the country.

    Disgraced Thursday, 22 September 2022 07:32 PM

Now you have started your "International" travel when the nation is starving. "Make hay while the sun shines". Shame on you Mr President.

It is always a good thing to get acquainted with these practices when you are old. Down to earth.

    MILINDA Friday, 23 September 2022 02:30 AM

This is a visit necessary as the late Shinzo Abe had helped us much. The LRT WHICH WAS CANCELED BY THE CROOKS IS ONE. HE WILL ALSO MEET THE CURRENT PM RE AID AND RESTRUCTURING OF DEBTS CREATED BY A VAIN MAN WHO WITH HIS 3 SONS LOOTED THE COUNTRY

Samson de silva Friday, 23 September 2022 09:00 AM

Sri Lanka's Ambassador for funerals. Why not? He has the most suited face for sad occasions. Let's use him for that purpose. Useless for anything else.

rohani samath Friday, 23 September 2022 09:44 AM

What a God Send. What a waste of time and money when the Sri Lanka nation is suffering without food and basic needs.
