President Ranil Wickremesinghe said homosexuality is an offence under the Penal Code, and the government will most probably take action to repeal this provision.
President Ranil Wickremesinghe said this in response to a question on queer rights during an interview organized by Harvard University on March 24 through Zoom technology.
“On the first question on queer rights, as our law now stands, homosexuality is an offense under the Penal Code, but it has not been enforced for the last five decades to my knowledge. Certainly, the government will or will not enforce that law. But now a group of parliamentarians is discussing, and most probably will take action to bring legislation to repeal this provision of the penal code. I know the discussions are going on and maybe at some stage they will bring the resolution, the law, to Parliament,” he said.
The President’s Media Division (PMD) made available the transcript of the interview to the local press. (Kelum Bandara)

So is it worth to bring this man into power to just get the IMF loan and permanently change this country culture into a western culture where gay people marry and have babies?

As an unenforced law in the statute books, there clearly is no need to give it any parliamentary time to revisit it. Instead, the government should focus its energy and time on restructuring and rejuvenating the economy and thereby rebuilding the livelihoods of its people.

This is the last thing you need to demoralise and bring back to the country all dirty of western culture...even Eastern countries such as Japan and others don't approve why do you know this .. moral decay we have is enough and you want to destroy the country and its culture by this and people would not vote for you if you do it ..

Intervention in so sensitive matters such as this by a leader of a country representing no electoral mandate of the people should be resisted and bringing in any reforms to the existing law should be outlawed

Was this a precondition to obtain IMF loan? We have a culture and a path to bring our next generation, not in the path you like to introduce. There may be people to choose that life, let them do, but certainly not through the law Mr.President.

Sri Lankans must be one of the most intolerant and uneducated people in the world. They think their culture is Victorian British culture. It was the British who criminalized homosexuality in the colonial era. What can you say about people who don’t know their own culture.

Live and let live. Respect individual preferences. Culture, my foot. All these archaic laws are religion based.
