President Ranil Wickremesighe should seek a fresh mandate if he wants to make fresh policy decisions with regard to security or any other matter, MP Channa Jayasumana told Parliament today.

Speaking during the committee stage debate on the budget, MP Jayasumana said it is not clear whether a person who is elected by the House to serve the remaining period after a President resigns can go for an election after four and a half years. “The opinion has to be sought from the Judiciary to get this cleared,” he said.

“I am prepared to bring a private members' motion to provide provisions for the incumbent President to go for a snap presidential election,” he added.

He said the incumbent President has been defeated in 1994, 2004 and 2019 and therefore he does not have any mandate to implement his policies. Accordingly he said the present President should go for a fresh presidential election.

“Members of Parliament have to elect a new President if the winner of a Presidential election dies on his way back home after swearing in. This is against the principles of democracy.(Yohan Perera)

Whom do you propose to be the new president, Sri Lankan voters good be bought for money, all past elections were marred by violence, can the state efford a massuive sum to elect a new president, what is the guarantee that the incoming president would perform better than the incumbent presiden, don't you think it is better to recover the monies robbed by officials and politicians rather than going for an election.

lmost all the elections of the past era were subject to vote rigging, voter influence by advance letters of appointments, promising housels, even elections officials at polling booths favour certain candidates etc; hence any elections should be after economic revival of the country.

Professor is clearly a dumb who has no knowledge of Constitution on Presidency. He had every right when the 21 Amendment was argued in Supreme Court to present his case legally. OK go ahead of your Private Motion and how it fares in Parliament and Supreme Court. Prof is nonentity and frustrated now with no privileges enjoyed as Minister. Get lost my dear Prof

You guys are always asking elections which you know very well that it won't happen until the due date. Do you think people will re-elect you? I don't think so. Why don't you talk something beneficial for the people? You can't because you guys don't have any ideas rather than spreading rumors.

Mandate was given when RW was elected as the President by the majority of MP's in the parliament according to the constitution.

In 1994, when President Richard Nixon resigned, Gerald Ford was appointed as the 38th President of USA, the most powerful country in the world. He was not elected by the people of the country.

What does the democracy do about a president elected, when he is elected at an elections, whilst the nominee is still a citizen of another country and against the prevailing constitution of the country at the time of his elections and goes onto implement the 20th amendment and those parliamentarians who connived with that move!!?

Of course "Hitler Wickremasinghe"won't go for any form of election as he knows very well he will never win. This is a crook who had to enter parliament through the back door. He couldn't even win a single seat in Colombo.

Is this not the man called Peni Sumana? Thursday, 24 November 2022 11:11 PM

Was he not the man who promoted syrup, as a cure for COVID-19. Is he not the man who earned a fancy name as Peni Sumana? Is he not the man who shared the Peni spoon with Pavithra licking the spoon? Now Is he the man who wants the nation to spend millions of public money, so that the same rogues or a different set of rogues can come to power as OUR RULERS? What a confidence?

Pantha Kumaran Thursday, 24 November 2022 11:16 PM

Our President came thorough the back door. The same will go thorough the back door. Today sadly we don't have leader who can take our country forward. Only God can help us.

This guy seems to want an opportunity to bring in more thugs, thieves and undesirables to parliament! Let's havechanges made to the voting and election system before another election. The current proportional representation system has got to go, and we need to revert back to the first.past the post system. That only will pave the way for a genuine systems change to set in motion. Alibaba's and their thieves would want elections before any changes to the voting and election system could be made to safeguard and perpetuate their power dominance for personal freedom.

Can't he remember the 2005 defeat? when Basil,Mangala and Sripathi paid Piribaharan to stop Tamil votes in the North !!!!!!!

    Dayan Friday, 25 November 2022 07:02 AM

Yes, he can act as Hitler after obtaining people's mandate as elected president. Interim president can not do what ever he wishes.

    Damian Friday, 25 November 2022 09:34 AM

Absolutely. Specially since he has decided to sell countries assets which belongs to the people of the country. If he does take critical policy decisions without the mandate of the people he should be tried for treason after his tenor is over.

    Man Friday, 25 November 2022 11:01 AM

Good effort of the professor to make it democratic. In fact, Gota had been a US citizen when he was elected. So. Gota's election was not legal. Therefore, a Presidential election is overdue, to make the Presidency, legitimate. Till then, the President's instructions are not legal and not required to be valid and bound.

Tissa Fernando Friday, 25 November 2022 02:01 PM

He will not become president then . Another useless idiot who wants to distribute asbestos to the poor will come into power and take the country to the next deep shit hole.
