Though the request was made to the Ministry of Defence to obtain detention orders beyond 72 hours on IUSF convenor Wasantha Mudalige and two others, police said no actions have been taken so far as reported by certain media.

Police said 19 protestors, including four monks, were arrested by the Cinnamon Garden, Slave Island, Borella Police Stations and the Kelaniya Divisional Criminal Investigation Division for being members of an unruly gathering during the protest march held by the Inter-University Student Union in Colombo on Thursday.

They said 16 of the arrested suspects have been produced before the Magistrate's Court Friday  and 15 of them were released on bail and one suspect has been remanded until August 26.

Three suspects including IUSF convenor Wasantha Mudalige were detained for 72-hour under the Prevention of Terrorism Act.

Meanwhile, it was reported that the Defence Ministry issued detention orders on IUSF convenor Wasantha Mudalige and Hashan Gunathilake to be detained for 90 days.

However,  only the above-mentioned actions have been taken so far in connection with the investigation, despite some media reports.(DSB)

In the North every aspect of live has military oversight. Now they are making the South a society where every aspect is having police oversight. We fought a thirty year war to extinguish liberties in the North and now our liberties in the South are being crushed

IUSF is causing unnecessary inconveniences to peace loving general public. Authorities must find with evidence the political party backing them, take them to courts. None has the right for unruly behaviour using democratic rights to harass public. Must be punished, those unruly monks should be sent back to their respective temples for Pirivena, not fit to be in campus or send unruly monks to their homes.

a court ordering Wasantha Mudaluge to be punished by ordering him to finish his degree sitting in a jail cell might do all in society and himself a lot of good. 9 years he has been skipping his university classes and doing politics.

To detain for suspected terrorism the Police must inform court how they assume the matter under terrorism. They must not be allowed by courts to just keep the suspect in detention for 72 hours in the absence of evidence. If courts allow, in my mind the court can be seen as aiding and abetting

Hardly working leaches Saturday, 20 August 2022 10:23 AM

Every body was praising him when they started this protest campaign to alleviate the suffering of our people . Their struggle helped much to chase out Gotha who bankrupted our economy. Their campaign to oust Ranil is very reasonable as he has not got any mandate from the country men, to be the president of this country. He is merely a person who was elevated to this position by 134 unscrupulous persons in the parliament. Now we are witnessing how Ranil is working according to the whims and fancies of these rouges. So the coming forward of these students to stop this menace should be appreciated rather than criticizing them.

The Aragalaya achieved immense success, which none have imagined ousting Gota, which did occur, but Aragalaya exceeded 100 days, participation became thinning, thieves, drug addicts, money swindlers intruded the Aragalaya, with sinister motives, ignited violence, setting fires to residences etc; caused Aragalaya to lose momentum.

‘…The infant Bodhisatta was terrified at his father's apparent cruelty and thought to himself, "A king acts as judge, and so he must perform cruel actions every day. By condemning men to death or torture, he will however himself be condemned to hell." ‘ RW, who is known to be well versed in the Buddha dhamma must surely know the Themiya Jataka from which this quote comes. The comments here say much to underline the public protest against abuse and misuse of power and, how it is commended at times for its achievements and condemned at others! It is also recorded how governments have failed to initiate dialogue with youth, in particular, from the 1960s onwards, and how they paid the price. Surely, RW knows and can do better! But his failure to do so, and simply be an ingrate to the very protest that propelled him to power, will not auger well for him or the nation!

Some of these aragalaya guys worked according to diaspora agenda and got money from them. Now diaspora archived some of their targets. So no funding for the aragalaya now. Diaspora might work well with RW. Although aragalaya is a good turning point for the political system and the economy, aragalaya didn't have a proper plan or a passion to go head after kicking out Gota. I don't think any more aragala in future. Ultimately, aragalaya damaged the trust of the innocent people in the country.

IUSF is an organization which is not banned like the LTTE. So, they too, got basic human rights. In fact, they are heroes.
