At least 165 dairy cows were reported dead in Kilinochchi due to the extreme cold weather that gripped the island over the past few days, area residents said.
According to residents, calves and cows that could not bear the cold caused by the inclement weather had died while they were kept inside their sheds. The Kilinochchi Disaster Management Centre said that temperature drops as low as 17 degrees were recorded over the past few days.
The Centre added that the number of animals killed due to the extreme weather conditions could be higher.

It is really unfortunate and I'm sorry for all families effected by this disaster..it could have cost them more 20 millions in rupees. Very sorry and they should have warmed up the sheds and keep them under some warmer rooms ...please learn a lesson for any future such eventualities

17 degrees is not cold. Cows routinely survive outdoors at temperatures just over zero. This needs proper investigation.

There is no way anything can die at 17 degrees Celsius.
