The Nidahas Janatha Sabhawa's intention is to form a joint opposition with the minimum aim of taking on the Ranil Wickremesinghe administration, the party's leader and opposition Member of Parliament Dallas Alahapperuma said today.

“It is essential to form the broadest alliance possible to defeat the Wickremesinghe administration. Therefore, the Nidahas Janatha Sabahawa is ready to have a dialogue with the SJB, JJB and all other opposition groups,” Mr. Allahapperuma told the Daily Mirror.

“Our intention is to give priority to build a bridge for all opposition parties to fulfill the common goal of defeating the incumbent government. Therefore, our approach is to build a common agreement among the opposition parties. All should be committed to a common programme rather than thinking of their party and their personal ambitions,” he said.

Meanwhile, SJB General Secretary Ranjith Madduma Bandara who commented on the matter said his party is currently in a discussion with the group led by Mr. Allahapperuma.

“We are currently talking to Alohapperuma’s group on a joint programme,” he said.

However, he said it is not clear as to whether it would be possible to team up with JJB. “We don’t know whether it will be possible to have a dialogue with the JJB,” he added. (Yohan Perera)

Sri Lankan politicians think that politics is all about defeating the other side. We don't care who defeats whom if you can't bring in economic reforms.

Cannot bring about any changes without defeating the the other. What is the point of all policies if other side keeps winning. However, once elections are defeated or cancelled for whatever flimsy reasons, the MPs in opposition will wake up to their folly.

Intention is excellent, but establishing a joint opposition alliance is only a dream. This is because there are many wanting to lead.
