Former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe today said he does not regret much about not getting elected to Parliament at the last general elections, but saddened to note what the elected MPs were doing.

He said this when ideas were exchanged between the government and opposition MPs to raise questions at the Prime Minister and on the suspension of sectoral oversight committees.

Mr. Wickremesinghe was replying to Leader of the House Dinesh Gunawardena who made a comment on the former Prime Minister.

“Mr. Wickremesinghe wouldn’t have had to go home, if he implemented the proposals he made today during the time of his tenure as the Prime Minister. He had to go home because he failed to do what he proposed today,” Mr. Gunawardene said.

“I don’t regret going home, but I feel sad when looking at what the sitting MPs are doing today,” Mr. Wickremesinghe said in response while stressing the need for reintroducing the oversight system in the House.

The issue on Prime Minister's question session and suspension of sectoral oversight committee when SJB MP Buddhika Pathirana inquired as to why the Prime Minister's question session was not being carried out in the House.

Mr. Gunawardene assured that Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa is always ready to answer the questions raised by the members of Parliament.(Yohan Perera and Ajith Siriwardana)

Ranil wants to ape Britain and focus on committees and procedures instead of substances. Metaphorically speaking “ In Britain they insist on ironing the socks but don’t even care to polish the shoes”. We have to follow our own Asiatic smart and practical way of conducting things.
