It is extremely doubtful that donor countries or global financial agencies would extend a helping hand or their good offices to Sri Lanka to come out of the current economic, political and social mess when they review the handling of the economy and law and order in the country under the Ranil Wickremesinghe regime, the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) said yesterday.

The senior vice president and the media consultant of the party, Prof. Rohana Lakshman Piyadasa told Daily Mirror that almost all the UN agencies and the entire global community were unhappy over the use of the draconian Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) to suppress dissent, peaceful protests and the incarceration of University students who aired their displeasure exchanging foreign currency is taking place outside the legal banking system, such as ‘Hawala’ or ‘Undial system

Identifying Sri Lanka as the 5th country in the world with highest food price inflation ratio, using outdated and condemned laws to suppress lawful public gatherings and protests are not encouraging signs for donors and creditors to have any pity on Sri Lanka, he said.

It is sad to witness that the government has met all the criteria to brand Sri Lanka as a failed state or pariah state by defaulting the debt servicing, failure to provide three square meals per day to 6 million people (according to the World Food Programme), total collapse of law and order with arrests of thousands of

Sri Lankans who participated in anti-government protests and failure to contain a reign of terror led by the underworld. The government has also failed to reach to a consensus with the opposition political parties to form an interim government for a limited period of time until Parliamentary polls are held as expected by the global community, the Mahanayakas, other religious leaders and 22 million Sri Lankans living in and out of the country, Prof. Piyadasa stressed. ”The biggest drawback to come to an agreement to form an all-party – inclusive interim government is the continuous refusal by President Wickremesinghe to give a time frame for this stop gap government and its road map and also the specific date to hold the general election for a fresh mandate. He must be transparent and show his bona-fide intentions to the opposition led by the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) and other political parties and groups when he holds discussions with them on the matter. My assessment is that Ranil is not genuine at this powwow with the opposition and his hidden agenda is only to ensure his political survival as long as possible despite the anger, rejection and detest by almost all Sri Lankans,” Prof. Piyadasa charged.

He expressed fear that there was a possibility of Sri Lanka losing the GSP+ trade facility while the UNHRC further tightened its strictures dictated to Sri Lanka at the 46th session held in March 2021 during the forthcoming 51st regular session scheduled to be held from September 12 to October 7th in Geneva this year when the EU and the UN body review Sri Lanka’s human rights record, the progress of the reconciliation process and performance of the government.(Sandun Jayasekera)

Sirisena, the Former President, who paved the way for today's economic collapse of the country is now preaching good governance to the current President. Sirisena led events which contributed to the downfall:- 1.0 Unconstitutional changing of Prime Minister by Sirisena in Dec 2018 2.0 Dodging the responsibility to the poor internal security which led to East Attack in April 2019 3.0 Promoting and plotting to bring back Rajapaksha regime in Nov 2019

Honestly, as long as Ranil Rajapakshe being our President no-one will help us, but if Ranil Wickramasinghe be our President Donors globally will help SriLanka.

All parties that governed Sri Lanka from Independence are equally responsible for the current mess including, SLFP, UNP, SLPP, and smaller parties. Look at most of the Ministers, they are all more than 65 , and what they know about the issues faced by the country or younger generation. They just want to hang on to the politicians to earn for their generations which is the only good thing we have seen so far.

Crackdown on protest biggest uglyness Monday, 29 August 2022 09:40 AM

Sure we are in trouble because of military and police used to crush freedom of expression. However, SLFP can always ask for debate to change laws to prevent future happening like now. Get rid of PTA, give a full freedom of political expression like what America has as part of the their 1st Amendment to their constitution. The political turmoil I think is not so bad, some country like Australia got through a lot of leadership change in their parties. And even in UK, Prime Ministers not last the term before their own party revolt. That's nothing compared to the ugliness that shows with crackdown on protestors. No country, unless like India, and China which also clamp down on protest will feel any pity.

With the exception of India no country is willing to provide significant aid to rescue our country from self induced destruction. They have now come to realise that giving money to our failed paradise is like giving money to a begging drug addict who will use it to by drugs. Our drugs that are destroying us include maintaining our 330000 armed forces, subjugating sections of our citizens, maintaining a symbiotic relationship between the troika of armed forces, politicians and monks, a unproductive cohort of monks etc

It will take time, but we as a nation standing together will alone bring our country out of the present economic crisis. All we need is commitment, hard work, mutual understanding, and we need to stop this unnecessary blame-game. True, there were serious mistakes of the past, but if we stand together we will rise again. To begin with; let's do away with all these street protests. What an eye sore, what a waste of time and energy.

International donors and debt holders don't give a dime about the imprisoning of student. Let's talk about the real issue. The big government sector with waste and corruption culture. Make a statement regarding reforms.
