President Ranil Wickremesinghe nor the government, have any intention whatsoever to differ the Local Government (LG) polls and as such it is up to the Election Commission (EC) to hold a free and fair election, Cabinet Spokesman Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardana said today.

Responding to Daily Mirror at the weekly post cabinet news briefing last morning, Minister Gunawardana said the UNP-SLPP led alliance has already begun its electoral process and applications have already been called from suitable persons for consideration for nominations.

“The preliminary work for the LG polls have been started by the UNP as well as the SLPP. The preparation of nomination lists are in progress. Both parties have come to an agreement to contest the LG polls as an alliance,” Minister Gunawardana added.

The party hierarchy of the UNP and the SLPP, have instructed their grassroots level organizers to get ready for the LG polls, he said.(Sandun A. Jayasekera)

So why is Naveen Dissanayake, a stalwart of the President's party the UNP, asking the treasury to declare it has enough funds to call for an election? Don't you think these are just feelers to gauge the public reaction in case Ranil dares to do the unthinkable?

The bigger question is why a small country like SL needs so many local and Provincial Councils? This country is over-governed and it is an utter waste of tax payers money (if SL has tax payers that is). Get rid of all those and majority of the 225 useless MPs. SL only need about max 100 MPs and and about 15 Minsters all up. Full stop. That's a system change!

A system to postpone the elections for ever, like the provincial council elections? Quite absurd.

The only elections that the people need right now is a GENERAL ELECTION, not these useless Local Council elections. So much money is going to be wasted for nothing. Better spend those precious funds for a General election, so that we can chase away all the crooks, that are still sucking this country dry.
