The government today assured that the group of university students who were arrested yesterday during a protest would not be dealt with Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA).
Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena gave this assurance in response to a question raised by Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa.
The Opposition Leader said a group of 25 university students of the Inter University Student Federation (IUSF) have been arrested during a protest and questioned as to whether they would be detained under PTA.
He said university students had not caused any damages to state or private property and that they had only exercised their right to protest.
"The government has unleashed state terrorism against the protesters. Have people been scrapped of their political rights, right to dissent? he questioned. The Prime Minister said the government was not hoping to take action against the arrested students inder PTA and that action would be taken against them under the general laws. How can we trust the PM Dinesh, When Ranil said as PM that Aragalaya must continue and that he will give necessary support to them. When Ranil became President he forgot what he said and placed some arrested under PTA detention.

So whats "under current law" what do you define by it? Why would innocent protestors be arrested in the first place, every singe citizen has a right to express their freedom of speech and the right to demonstrate against a government. If Gunawardena is serious about staying as prime minister he better get his act together fast. This is state sponsored terrorism and the government is running a fear campaign to deter people from their right to protest.

This statement highlights the fact that law enforcement is not independent in this country and controlled by the powers that be.

You can say anything you like. But you are keeping the PTA to protect your govt and not for the public. Next election will teach you how far you have gone gone from the common masses.

D s de Silva: You must also talk about the state sponsored terrorism on Tamils that gave birth to LTTE and 30 long years of destruction of the country.

The question is why were they arrested as they are allowed to protest as per the Constitution and why the SLPP thugs in the Parliament who attacked the Speaker are not arrested?
