Nightlife destroy SL’s culture: Cardinal

Archbishop of Colombo Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith yesterday urged all religious leaders including the Maha Sanga to take the lead in preventing night life activities which have been proposed and thereby safeguard Sri Lanka’s culture.

Cardinal Ranjith who was speaking during a public gathering in Kurana Negombo , Sri Lanka’s culture which is nurtured by Buddhism should not be allowed to be destroyed by night life activities.

“ Some ‘parangiyas’ who have come to Sri Lanka after being abroad have proposed night life activities. They propose the growing cannabis. All these things are being done while making an effort to make Sri Lanka free of drugs. They speak of sentencing those who are found guilty of drug related offences to death. These and other night life activities will destroy our culture which is based on the Buddhist philosophy. Therefore we urge religious leaders , particularly the Buddhist monks to take the lead in safeguarding our rich culture,” he said.

“We also see handing over lands to various foreign companies. We would like to remind the political leaders not to use this nation just for power and positions,” he added.

“ What Sri Lanka needs is a philosophical revolution,” he said. (Yohan Perera)

Completely agree with you, your eminence. Foreigners don't come to SL for night life, they have better countries like Thailand, Philippines for it. What they look for in SL is the natural beauty, warm hospitality, and glimpse of simple life style and tranquility. It's our own morons want prostitutes and drugs to be rampant here...

SL culture was destroyed when the Portuguese Army attacked our Kingdoms killed our kings , killed all civilians who resisted the invasion , and then converted the Hindus and Buddhists to Catholicism. Then the Portuguese ruled over us in our own country destroying hundreds of Hindu and Buddhist temples and building Catholic Churches all over Sri Lanka. Cows once revered in Hindu and Buddhist cultures became a source for meat and the strong spirits were introduced as harmless leisurely drinks. Now you have the shameless arrogance to say that nightlife is a threat to the SL culture !!! You are talking a load of blocks, mate.

Are you off your head. Night life activities are a must as that can help the economy. Religious leaders should stay away from economy related matters and they should focus pnly on religious matters. Probably those who are against legal growing of cannabis are either owners of illegal cannabis farms and individuals supported by such owners. Government should check this fellows connections too. Also this fellow cannot say parangiyas for others as he should know from where his religion came to Sri Lanka and changed the culture first. Lol.

Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith is right when he speaks of Sri Lanka undergoing a "philosophical revolution" - and that means a return to and renewal of the Buddhist roots and morals that made the country great !!! Buddhism, one of the most highly evolving philosophies mankind has created, contains all the qualities and necessary elements to eliminate injustices and differences between people and to face life!!! It connects people across all cultures and religions and does not allow defamation or contempt for other people!!! Your Eminence our country is not a Theosophical State it is a democratically elected country by the people and governance should be left to the elected leaders of the people. You have got a wrong understanding about nightlife, which is a way of attracting Tourists into the country. Look at some of the Buddhist countries which are driving their economies in versatile ways to help the growth of theses economies with checks and balances in place. You are talking about a 2500 years of culture my question is have we reached the pinnacle of Spirituality. We have been ruined not only spiritually but materially. The Pope being an outspoken Spiritual Leader emphasized that the Clergy who are outwardly expressing values of spirituality are doing the opposite within closed doors. Do you think that the many things happening during nightlife does not happen during daytime. If there is a Will there is a way. As such let the public decide what they require and the clergy follow their vocation.

What exactly is a " GOOD " culture of a country ? Some would say it is how a country treats its old people , how it treats its handicapped people , its how it treats its poor people , how it strives to level up the wealth of the population , how it has systems to expose and remove corrupt people from positions of power , and last but not least how it quickly brings to justice wrongdoers. Might i dare suggest we fall down on quite a number of these positions. I should say wealthy and powerful countries like the USA also fall well below the barrier of " A Good Culture " especially in its treatment of the poor. Having travelled the world and lived in some European countries i must say i have been fairly impressed by the general honesty of their politics and the treatment of the poorer members of their society. This is what i would call "A Good Culture". The idea that European foreigners will come to Sri Lanka to spoil our culture is complete fantasy.

Need to make economy stand by whatever means. Deficit task, trade unions going to do general strikes, when their incomes are affected, not thinking that they still have jobs, were as lot have already lost their lively hoods!
