In the wake of the death of a 16-year old girl at former a minister's house, the National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) said that steps will be taken to inspect wealthy households closely in the Colombo area to check whether under-age children are being employed as domestic helpers.

NCPA Chairman Prof. Muditha Vidanapathirana said that the authority has received information that under-age children are being employed as domestic aides in some city's wealthy households.

"We have received information that small children are being kept as domestic workers in the residences of wealthy families in and around Colombo. We are hoping to inspect such houses in the next few days. If there are under-aged children, we will not hesitate to arrest those residents" he said.

It was reported that both girls and boys from poor families, particularly from the plantation community, continue to be employed as domestic workers by households in Colombo and other urban areas.(DSB)

A very good move. This is basic human rights. Why were all those NGOs and human right organisations silent all this time? Was it because it effected only the poor estate sector workers? As a civilised developing nation such practices of child slavery cannot be tolerated from a MP or anyone.

NCPA is another failed institute. They haven't done a single thing to improve the welfare or protection to children

Only the households of minorities, right?

But the most affected of this would be the alcoholic fathers of these girls. NCPA should also make sure their households back in the estate are suitable for them to live in.

Good. Also check the temples for underaged boys, also exploited and deprived from the love and care of their poor parents.

Very nice. This is how the police and media should act. Then only all those who really have underaged children will wait till you guys come to their home and arrest. I just don't understand the m9tive behind this news. Are you guys trying to save these culprits so they quickly get rid of these children and act act as if they never did it? This doesn't even happen in a movie, but i happens in SL.

If the authorities do a honest job ,they will certainly find thousands of poor underage girls and boys from these affluent house holds.
