The Lanka Private Bus Owners' Association (LPBOA) claimed that most of the road accidents were caused by modified private buses.

Addressing the media, LPBOA Chairman Gemunu Wijerathne said the Department of Motor Traffic (DMT) has allowed buses to add certain modifications with certain payments.

He said the LPBOA does not accept the proposal by the DMT and will not participate in any meetings held in this regard.

"A letter in this regard was sent to the Transport Ministry secretary, informing him that the LPBOA does not agree with the adding of modifications and decorations such as lights, bus wrappings, fixing horns with higher sounds, fixing sound and TV systems and adding stainless steel items," Wijerathne said.

Most buses use decorations and additional equipment against the law, and these buses cause many road accidents, he said.

"Unfortunately, a meeting was held with several bus owners, sticker companies and the Ministry, and it was decided to grant permission for bus wrappings and to play DJ music at the place where the bus is parked. These buses are like mobile nightclubs," he said.

"Therefore, I made a complaint to the Bribery Commission yesterday against the DMT Commissioner General to conduct an immediate investigation in this regard. We have reasonable doubts whether the DMT Commissioner General received any bribes from the bus sticker companies," he added. (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)

Make uniform color scheme mandatory for buses.

Most accidents involving deaths of passengers in the buses occur because none of the Indian made buses have modern stabilising mechanisms to prevent veering off the road or tilting when impacted. If we had bought buses from Japan, China, or Western Europe none of these major accidents would have happened and passengers would not have died.

First of we need a complete BAN on importing these buses from India

Private buses are the main cause of accidents Monday, 21 August 2023 04:59 PM

Gemunu is trying to distract from the fact Private Buses are the biggest cause of accidents in general. He is trying to weasel his way to point finger at non-members of LPBOA as the owners of the modified buses. Government must not let private buses in general cause more mayhem and deaths.

We are probably the only country in the world where private buses and three wheel taxi have no uniform colour code. We should make it mandatory that all private buses, have one uniform standard colour code like Green or Blue. Same applies to three wheelers and taxis'. All should clearly display the Owner, Driver and Conductor details. Most importantly the buses and taxi's should have comprehensive passenger insurance.

lol its not decorations but the reckless driving of your drivers who are not paid a salary and instead asked to race on the road for customers. You need to change this practice and reckless driving will disappear.

It is not the bus but the driver should take the blame as we see all the busses break all the road rules while the traffic police is fast asleep! Most drivers break the law and accidents happen due to unruly driving. This includes pedestrians who cross the road from any where and most don't adhere to the traffic lights by crossing when the light is red!

This sounds very funny. do we have a Motor Traffic Dept? In other countries the vehicles have to go through a proper check to renew the revenue licence. Any defects need to be repaired, tyres should be road worthy, any additions to the vehicle should be approved and then that the revenue licence is issued. Here corruption is at it's best that without anything they get any licence. If they start this the MTD also could earn an annual fee from every vehicle at the time of renewal.

Accidents are not caused by stickers but by irresponsible drivers . Drivers need to be civilized.

Hard Truth Tuesday, 22 August 2023 11:00 AM

These stickers are becoming an eyesore for the general public. Need code for the stickers, horn and lights must be implemented. Even in developed countries private buses don't have fancy stickers.
