The 26-year old driver of the Mercedes car, Mohammad Ryzul Rizzaq, who fled the scene after the fatal accident in Kollupitiya on Saturday morning was arrested last night at the Katunayake airport when he returned from Dubai, police spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa said.

He said the suspect was arrested at the BIA, since a travel ban was imposed on the suspect. The suspect was handed over to the Kollupitiya Police, the spokesman said.

The suspect fled to Dubai, a few hours after the Mercedes Benz car which he drove, smashed against a three wheeler while returning from a night club on Saturday morning.

The driver of the three wheeler died in the accident while two passengers on board the car were injured.

The driver of the car fled the scene soon after the accident and later found that the suspect had slipped out of the country. (Darshana Sanjeewa Balasuriya)

With the present day government and the police and military, I do not believe this news. Sorry about that.

    joshua Tuesday, 13 December 2022 08:52 AM

So he went to Dubai for a day outing ?

    Truth Tuesday, 13 December 2022 09:25 AM

There is no Justice for the family of the poor man who died. He will bribe himself out with political influence and never serve a day in jail.

Brilliant but starved Tuesday, 13 December 2022 09:46 AM

Good job, let’s start another racist campaign, and nation loving Namal, Gota, and Mahinda co are free after bankrupting the country. Good job and great journalism, just what we need

Tak Tik Tuk Tuesday, 13 December 2022 10:08 AM

Most likely he went to Dubai to arrange some cash to pay blood money and get out of jail fast...

This is outcome of night life economy.

So he should get life in prison without parole. Let’s see, he will get a presidential pardon too.

Uday Tharumakulasingam Tuesday, 13 December 2022 11:11 AM

Does not make sense why he would come back if he was the driver of the car? Does it? So he crashes his car in Kollupitiya, the car looks badly damaged, still he was able to get to the airport , which approx 1 hour from Kollupitiya, clear security and the airport entrance, line up to checking his baggage (if he had any), still have line up to get the boarding pass, then clear immigration, again security.....and so on with in a few hours. The assumption does not include if he was hurt and bleeding and if so they would have stopped him and questioned him? dont you think? And all this in a few hours and a day after he returns. If he could pulled this off, he should be having nerves of steal. Sounds hard to digest.

I agree. Sounds like some concocted bullshit story only our fellows would come up with???

This must be a staged managed drama , it again showed to the country that if you possess right kind of money you can pass any hurdle un hindered. Will see how the law applies to this person .

Something very fishy! Our Sri Lankan way of life at its best. No driver could have walked out of that accident without any injuries, and Uday's observations are valid.

    Ralahami Tuesday, 13 December 2022 12:00 PM

It will be found that it was the Tuk tuk driver's fault. Victim's family and cops will receive some funds, a new merc will be purchased and life will go on...

Mohamed Adham Tuesday, 13 December 2022 12:53 PM

Very fishy unbelievable story. This is what happens when you have enough money and influence in this banana republic. This is what happens if we have 24 hour Night life like Soosthi Diana is advocating. People still haven't realised that you cannot DRINK AND DRIVE. Maximum punishment should be meted out. But I doubt if this will happen. Probably come to a financial compromise with the poor victims family and be scot free to have more drink n drive joy rides. This world is absolutely NOT for the Poor and Downtrodden massess.

Chamara Sanjeeea Ranasinghe Tuesday, 13 December 2022 02:15 PM

I am prety sure about that no justice for Victim . Law and order don' t exit in the country ..

    Citizen Tuesday, 13 December 2022 03:56 PM

why is the public get involved in each accident, the correct protocol should be like in any other country, if there is an accident, the police, ambulance and insurance company should get involved. If anyone die and if it is drivers fault then blood money should be paid by the insurance company. If it is drunk and drive, then the licence should be cancelled for 5 years and the vehicle should be confiscated in addition to blood money.

This is indeed laughable, It appears the culprit absconded police arrest and slips via International Terminal and goes to Dubai as a 56 year old man (previous report). A few days later he reappears as a 26 year old man at BIA and then is arrested by the police. How convenient? Please spare this joke to some dumb individuals and tell us who the real person behind the wheel of this expensive Merc?

    Gamage Tuesday, 13 December 2022 05:52 PM

Looks like all arrangements have been made while this guy was in Dubai for an eyewash arrest drama and the subsequent release on bail. After some time everyone will forget about the incident and it will be swept under the carpet. Victim's family probably will get a small amount of money as compensation from this guy's father. And that's it.

Many accidents take place which are common occurrences and based on evidence the errant drivers are dealt by the Courts. There is no mystery in this driver's behavior it is only he is trying to defeat the law by being not present for the long arm of the law to have acted instantly. Normally where a death occurs a general blood test can measure alcohol in a person's body for upto 6 hours after the last drink taken while a breathalyzer tests works between 12 to 24 hours . Urine tests such as the ethyl glucuronide (ETC) tests are also effective for around 12 to 24 hours after use. When the driver is not available although the accident has taken place no evidence is available whether he was after drinks. Otherwise the driver who caused the accident after drinks will be liable and legally responsible. Evidence is necessary to be enforceable.

In the photographs, why is the arrested guy not wearing a sheet or towel over the head ? Usually an accused/suspect would be held by a couple of cops, draped in a sheet or towel (for the shame ????) and escorted to and fro. The fact that this guy is seemingly happily accompanying the cops is in itself, very suspicious. Another drama to fool the public that Law and Order exists in Sri Lanka ?

    cineha Tuesday, 13 December 2022 09:49 PM

Media news clips show that he is on his mobile while being escorted into the Kollupitiya police station while under arrest. It seems that the ground work has been done for his safe return.
