Sri Lankans with dual citizenship must obtain permission from the Registrar General when marrying foreigners, Registrar General of the Registrar General's Department P.S.P. Abeywardhana said.
He said that two formalities must be completed in order to get such permission.
Accordingly, the permission of the Registrar General will not be granted on the basis of the aspirant must be free from being issued a warrant from any legal authority or suffering from any communicable disease.
In the past 10 months, 1,703 Sri Lankans were married to foreigners with the consent of the Registrar General, and most of them were married to citizens living in the European countries, Abeywardena said.(Indika Sri Aravinda)

If you are living in a foreign country and getting married to a foreigner outside of Sri Lanka, why would you bother go through this bureaucratic process?

What stupid decision and demand is this? Is it to satisfy someone’s ego and get some dollars? Marriage is completely one’s individual decision. Even no need to get permission from the creator. This is where Sri Lanka lacks intelligence and have gutter politics. Can you name one country in this world where one has to get permission from the government to get married? A laughable and amusing decision from the Registrar generals department.

There is some logic in it, to ensure there is no legal warrant outstanding and no communicable diseases. In a way it protects the foreigner. If possible mandate this for local marriages also. at least sham marriages will go down.

Make it more difficult for people so that they will not get dual citizenship at all...what is wrong with this people ...why do you need to get consent of any one to marry ...this infringement of people freedom and democracy .. How Sri Lankan law law regulation goes bad to worse .. Poor leadership and poor civil servants and poor legal reasoning

For argument sake say a dual citizen holding Australian and Srilankan citizenship and living in Australia want to marry an Australian and you need to get permission from SL Registrar General's Department, did I get it right?

Right now a person afflicted with AIDS will be looked up better overseas than one who has a SL passport. Given this, why would anyone bother to seek citizenship of this south Asian land that was once called Serendib? Do not go very far, please look at the plight of Gota who is trying hard to seek US citizenship and ever ready to give up his SL citizenship. These corrupt politicians have nothing better to do.

Should a non-dual SL citizen have to get permission to marry a non-citizen ? Or is the privilege only reserved for dual citizens ? Something smells fishy. Probably a mechanism for Ranil to steal the persons assets.
