The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced on Friday that Marais Erasmus and Kumar Dharmasena will be the on-field umpires for the Men's T20 World Cup final between England and Pakistan at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on Sunday.

Erasmus was the on-field umpire for the first semifinal between Pakistan and New Zealand at the Sydney Cricket Ground while Dharmasena had been the on-field umpire for the second semifinal between India and England at Adelaide Oval.

Chris Gaffaney will be the TV umpire for the final match while Paul Reiffel will be the fourth umpire. The final will be overseen by Match Referee Ranjan Madugalle.

England are looking to win the tournament for the first time since their 2010 T20 World Cup triumph in the West Indies, after thrashing India by 10 wickets in Thursday's semifinal in Adelaide.

Pakistan are also looking to repeat their 2009 T20 World Cup victory in England after edging New Zealand by seven wickets in their Wednesday's semifinal clash in Sydney.

With 95 per cent chance of rain being predicted on Sunday and Monday, which is the main final day as well as the reserve day, there is a danger of the trophy being shared between the two teams.

But the ICC said through its Event Technical Committee (ETC), it has increased the provision of additional playing time on the reserve day to four hours from the original provision of two hours (as per clause 13.7.3 of the Playing Conditions), in case more time is required to complete the match and get a result.

ICC added that 10 overs per side are required to constitute a match in the knockout stage and every effort will be taken to complete the match on the scheduled match day.

Though it said that every effort will be made for the match to be completed on Sunday, with any necessary reduction of overs taking place and only if the minimum number of overs necessary to constitute a match cannot be bowled on Sunday will the match go into the reserve day.

Play on the reserve day will begin at 3pm Melbourne time and would be a continuation of play from the scheduled match day.

Rain has already washed out three Group 1 matches in Super 12s at the MCG in this tournament -- England versus Australia, Afghanistan versus New Zealand and Afghanistan versus Ireland. Ireland's surprise five-run victory over England at the same venue was also rain-affected.

  • This is how England fools the world Saturday, 12 November 2022 03:01 AM

The news that ICC has announced that our Kumar Dharmasena is being appointed as one of the on-field umpires for the T20 World Cup final between Pakistan and England is an outrage and a disgrace to sports. In the 2019 Cricket World Cup between England and New Zealand, New Zealand was poised to win the match until in the final over when one of the umpires made wrong decision and tipped the game in favour of England and the New Zealand was to loose the match. The umpire’s error was not a subjective judgement but a direct violation of the rules governing runs for overthrows. If that umpire had made the error in favour of New Zealand , England would have never forgiven him and his life as an umpire would have came to an end in 2019 itself. After that match he always had the “protection” of England and there were no official criticism laid against him, in fact he flourished as an international umpire and appeared around the world. Now, who is this umpire ? It is Kumar Dharmasena.

Article overlook reason so many Sri Lankan doing officiating is because our team is not playing. Better we got to finals than talk about our umpires doing officiating in the finals, because we're not in it. Reminds more about the failure of team to perform.

Sri Lankan umpire Kumar Dharmasena made a serious blunder in the 2019 T20 world Cup final which cost NZ the victory against England and was allowed to go scott free without any charges. Like true sportsmen NZ did not make a fuss and instead Dhamasena was promoted to the ICC elite panel.

Think it well Sunday, 13 November 2022 04:40 AM

Cricketer, your characterisation of New Zealand as true sportsmen for not challenging the umpires’s faulty decision is ludicrous. The reason why New Zealand not challenged the decision is to do with power balance. New Zealand is a British creation on a stolen land from the natives and thus Britain would always be perceived as superior by the New Zealanders to be challenged in a cricket field. Do you think New Zealand would have gone home quietly if it was ,say, Sri Lanka and not England that was in the World Cup final.
