Several female teachers in many schools in the island have begun attending schools dressed in casual clothes instead of the mandatory saree dress code.

The teachers had shared on social media that this step was taken due to the increase in the price of sarees due to the current economic crisis.

They claimed that it is difficult to buy sarees and attend school wearing a saree due to the economic difficulties and transport cost.

They also claimed the Ministry of Public Administration had also issued a circular stating that public servants can report to work wearing suitable clothes, so this step was taken based on that permission.

Earlier, several unions including Ceylon Teacher‘s Union (CTU) had urged the authorities to change the dress code for teachers.

However, the Education Ministry said it had no plans to change the dress code for teachers or children.

Education Minister Susil Premajayantha said despite the Public Administration Ministry issuing a circular that public sector employees will be allowed to wear a suitable dress, the ministry does not hope to apply that to schools. (Darshana Sanjeewa Balasuruya)

A storm in a tea cup. As long as they dress decently it should be accepted. Children should stick to school uniform code.

    Prasath Monday, 21 November 2022 06:38 PM

Good work let's see who can stop the teachers.

    Wixie Monday, 21 November 2022 06:38 PM

All Socialist movement destroying our country and our youth. Soon we might read sexual violence among kids like in the WESTERN countries. All ready we are reading Teachers promoting drugs in tution classes. All theses SOCIALIST movement is destroying our future generation for their political agenda.

This is NGO funded Stalin's coup to break Sinhala culture. Some of the Sinhalese falling foolishly for the trap.

Joseph Starlin Monday, 21 November 2022 07:39 PM

Well done teachers. There should not be any discrimination based on your job title. Of course, there are some jobs requires UNIFORM, e.g. Police, Army, etc. where this doesn't apply. In any other case the general Public Administration circular for the public servants should apply.

Chamath Jeevan Monday, 21 November 2022 07:49 PM

    Stupid. How about bikini ?

Ane Hondai Tuesday, 22 November 2022 03:06 PM

Why don't you go around wearing one yourself in public?

    Tom Monday, 21 November 2022 09:20 PM

The teachers must have a discipline. If they do not adeher, sack them.

    Rama Monday, 21 November 2022 10:22 PM

While teachers practice their freedom, they also maintain the discipline. Every one like to be western but its difficult to practice in everything as we have traditions and culture. Any how respect their freedom and urge to be mindful about traditions and culture

This is Sri Lanka. Not south India. Why stress on a masala dress? The teachers are far more decently dressed than showing half their bodies draped in a loose fabric. Less smell too.

    Aviator Tuesday, 22 November 2022 12:03 AM

Well done teachers...change this stupid system.

Lambopala Kanasinha Tuesday, 22 November 2022 12:18 AM

Only parliamentarians wear clean white cloths cover bad Evils done by stealing public funds, Kappam, Bribes, etc etc. As long as teachers wear decent dress, then it should be OK. Then the problem is forcing uniforms to children!! Therefore uniformity must be maintained among all!!

    Minu Tuesday, 22 November 2022 12:37 AM

Everyone, male or female, is allowed to wear what they want. Of course, you should know that you should not spoil this freedom and stay fit as teachers.

I teach in public school in the US. We can dress up or go in business casual as long as we present ourselves professionally. The Physical Education teachers dress in athletic clothing since it is functional. Some teacher dress up more if they are in higher grade. Preschool teachers dress more casually because they have to do mess art work and projects with the kids. Introduce the business casual dress code to teachers in Sri Lanka. It is more appropriate for the weather and teachers can function better mentally and physically when they are comfortably dressed.

@Ranjith Silva: Like in Western countries? Have you lived and worked in a Western country? Those countries are thousand times better than your wonderland SL.

    Dinesh Tuesday, 22 November 2022 02:58 AM

Female teachers must be subjugated to fairy tales and nonsense, or how will the boys grow up to disrespect and assault them.

    SirrPina Tuesday, 22 November 2022 04:20 AM

Discipline: When there is a rule follow the rule. You can always campaign to change the rule but don't take matters into your own hands and ruin discipline. The lack of training and grooming for bith principals and teachers is showing in these stubborn decisions. A case for high activity teachers like dancing acrobatics to be not in saree is justified but there is a way to change rules. This is where the monks have failed the nation miserably. Values must be inculcated by the religious leaders together with parents. when everyone is only doing politics they fail to do their own part. Joseph Starlin should agitate for teacher pensions marking fees etc been properly paid rather than been a political stooge for a murderous JVp PSF type outfits.

    Douglas Tuesday, 22 November 2022 04:25 AM

Teaching is a vocation. Gone are the days when teachers knew this fact. Now teaching is a political tool. If a teacher cannot wear a saree and ride a scooter then teach her how to ride.

Demuni de Silva Tuesday, 22 November 2022 06:25 AM

Teachers should spend time with children !

Gerard Peters Tuesday, 22 November 2022 06:43 AM

Excellent. It's good to wear decent clothing rather than the so-called cultural dress which exposes more than half the woman's body! Keep it up but make sure you ladies wear decent attire. Students' uniform should change as well. They must be allowed to come in casual clothing too. A dress code for both teachers and students can be introduced in order to maintain this. God only knows how many years it will take for our old-fashioned, backward thinking administration to come to terms with such changes.

Tight student Tuesday, 22 November 2022 07:17 AM

Chamith Jewan Good one mate further they might wear tight clothing with all the curves exposed with nothing else to reveal! Teachers you better continue to wear honourable saree if not what would stop children wearing jeans and tight clothing revealing unnecessary skin

    Citizen k Tuesday, 22 November 2022 07:48 AM

It's not the uniform that matters but how the lesson is taught.we should discard outdated systems and welcome the new. The same people who are clamouring for sarees want their kids taught English. What hypocrites!

    Wixie Tuesday, 22 November 2022 08:22 AM

Trousers and lightweight coat practical ,Buriyani Saree in bus difficult, will slip South of Her Border, good for Biology class .

    Wixie Tuesday, 22 November 2022 10:17 AM

With Saree Biology lesson simplified, can give idea of Pelvic Bone and the Yoniya Wasthuwa.

    Sam Tuesday, 22 November 2022 10:21 AM

Saree is not Sri Lankan cultural dress code. If we have adopted Indian culture what justifies the rule to wear only sarees. Everything needs to change and that's the norm. Finally, sanity should prevail.

Chandana AK Tuesday, 22 November 2022 10:37 AM

The saree is a dress which can wear in very decent manner as well as in very indecent manner. I have seen some teachers wearing it half of the body open. Hence wearing a some sort of dress which is suitable for the profession is needed. But it should not be a uniform.

    NightOwl Tuesday, 22 November 2022 10:44 AM

Rediculous decision to impose saree as the only clothing for teachers, when the sarees are not provided and very high cost due to almost entirety being imports without any value addition. Teachers should be allowed to wear alternative clothings within some dress code guidelines

    Waco Tuesday, 22 November 2022 12:12 PM

1st develop the country economically . Parliamentarians are looking some useless and unproductive things to waste time.

Ane Hondai Tuesday, 22 November 2022 03:05 PM

These teachers look like decent office workers. If they need to wear saree government should provide all of them the same, like uniform, like what is provided for Sri Lankan airlines staff. Teacher having to have their own saree makes them look like Indian housemaids.

    Sinhalese Tuesday, 22 November 2022 04:29 PM

The kandyan style osariya reveals more than half the body of a woman. The Indian saree can be worn in s decent manner but most Sinhalese women like to expose their bodies bringing disgrace on such a graceful and decent attire such as the saree.
