Mahela Jayawardena, former Sri Lankan captain and was one of the finest batters in the cricketing world, joined the Sri Lanka T20 squad in Australia on Friday, as the team prepares to take up the challenge in the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, which kicks off from October 16.

Jayawardena, who joined the side in the capacity of a Consultant Coach, will mainly provide the all-important strategic planning, while the coaching staff, headed by Englishman Chris Silverwood, continues to manage the side’s training and conditioning.

Last month, CEO of the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) said that Jayawardena will join the Sri Lanka cricket team as a Consultant Coach.

Sri Lanka have just two warm-up games in Melbourne prior to their opening clash, where they are to take on minnows Namibia in a first-round match at Geelong. (DSB)

forgive me for my ignorance. But I fail to see the connection. Are you implying that Mahela cannot afford to buy his own ticket to Melbourne

So what? There is a different team on opening the restaurant (if so) with owner Chef Dharshan Munidasa. Mahela

Actually, it would have been better if Mahela has not joined SL team. SL team has been doing pretty well under Mr. Chris Silverwood so far. Too many cooks will spoil the soup. Going by Mahela's poor IPL auction picks for Mumbai Indians and their very poor last season shows he has his flaws just like any other coach. SL team should have been left alone with Mr. Silverwood as they have made good progress over last few months.

Can see how much you know. Mahela was even behind Asia Cup success too. He was behind the scenes. SLC openly told the public about it

He was also given a better and bigger job by the MI owner and i am sure they know and have people who advise that knows more about cricket than you.

This guy Mahela only comes in to support SL cricketers when they are on the main stage. Or else he is busy in India. Our boys are doing so well, and his interference, to bolster his image for the world to see. He will confuse the team and demoralise the coach who has been doing a good job.

Asia Cup cricket champions 2022 Sri Lanka has yet to qualify to play in the T20 Cricket World Cup due to poor ranking in the ICC T20 format and have to win against minnows Namibia, Netherlands and UAE to qualify to play in the super 12's first while countries like Afghanistan and Bangladesh who gained entry to international cricket much later than Sri Lanka have already qualified to play in the super 12's due to their superior record. This proves the wide gap between Asian cricket and international cricket.

What is this strategic planning that is all-important? It seems this so-called "all-important strategic planning" is buzz word filled gimmick or ruse to throw around money. Did Jayawardena, have nothing better to do than have a trip to Australia in a lavish hotel, with excellent food? How much is Mahela being paid for this Consultant Coach business?

No disrespect for Mahela, but Silverwood earned the right to have Free rein to run the the SL team!! Period!!

@Hawkeye where do you live. Here my first impression is that you must be trying to seem obtuse. To make clear - Mahela is on a junket trip. I expect his being there for "mainly provide the all-important strategic planning" seems weasel words cover to soft bribe him so if anything in the least goes wrong in Australia he'll keep his stupid mouth shut.
