Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa is likely to step down from his position in the coming hours after both he and President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has agreed to form an All Party interim government, the Daily Mirror learns.

Following a meeting with the 11 party alliance members, a proposal had been submitted by the members that an all party interim government should be formed immediately with a new Prime Minister to ensure political stability in the country.

Both Mahinda and Gotabaya had given a favorable response with sources stating that Mahinda had agreed to step down for a new SLPP MP to be appointed to the Premiership to ensure immediate political stability.

Sources said that the name of Dinesh Gunwawardena had been proposed as the new Prime Minister but this was yet to be confirmed.

From the main opposition SJB side, the name of Harsha De Silva has been proposed as the new Finance Minister to replace Basil Rajapaksa. (JAMILA HUSAIN)

Radical change is needed.. We all love this country and we all should put the country first before our political and personal interest . Let us hope that common sense ; logics and wisdom prevail....A great damage has been done and yet to recover from this we may need at 7 to 10 years and I hope our economists and extern should use their expertise on this matter to recover from this crisis ..we can't do this over night as damage is great so we must plan it strategically to come out of this. I don't think all those who harmed this nation knowingly and intentionally could get away with it.. a lot of people are responsible for this mess. .. If interim government is following the old trick people will come out again soon... So don't try to fool people once again .

The only way it would work is for all the key ministers to step down; they have failed the country miserably. Starts with the President, Prime MInister, Minister of Finance, Director General of Finance, Deputy DG of Finance, Governor of the Central Bank, Deputy Governor of the Central Bank. All of these people are either incompetent or failed to speak up and are therefore complicit in SL's bankruptcy. These people cannot be part of the Interim Government, because they will be an obstacle and will defend their previous actions. Let the IMF take over the Interim Government to put in place the checks and balances for 6 months. It's painful, but it has to be done.
