Government MP Gevidu Cumaratunga who spearheads the civil society movement called ‘Yuthukama organization’ urged teachers who are on trade union action to be mindful of the challenging pandemic situation of the country and refrain from mass demonstrations in the greater good of public health.

Making his remarks to the media, MP Cumaratunga said the government had agreed in principle that the long-standing salary anomalies of school teachers and principals should be rectified. He said the government had even announced it in its manifesto specifically, but this was not the time for public protests and demonstrations.

“We urge the teachers to care for public health in the midst of the pandemic. We believe the government should have delayed the implementation of its decision to call for public servants to work at this juncture due to the situation. We don’t want to pinpoint anyone. However, we believe everyone, in the greater interests of the country and its people, should collectively decide,” he said.

He said the health staff was exhausted due to the surging number of cases. (Kelum Bandara)

Delta variant has already spread in Colombo. See the graphic of the experts. Why you can't tell govt to withdraw the circular directing all govt servants to report for duty at this disastrous situation?

Cumaratunga is one sided and he would realise that the teachers and principals' grievances are reasonable when looking at some of the unnecessary projects that are being hurried through at this time of dire financial crisis and the waste seen around.

Mr. Kumaratunga, After a long silence, good to hear from you. May be you must have followed the theory of " Silence is good for the health." In a critical moment, it is really commendable for your request for teachers and Principals to reconsider their protest. However, protesters must be able to trust the Authority that they are truthful and reliable.

We are a people with high literacy rate. But appealing to their good senses was totally neglected. Trading accusations, using police force etc were given priority, We do have effective motivation speakers who could appeal to the people to do the right think. It is their own health so they will listen.
