The regulations under the Import and Export Control Act will be submitted for parliament approval in due course after Cabinet nod for the same was given this week.

Approval for the gazette issued in September will be sought to pave the way for migrant workers to import electrical vehicles. The allowance is made by the government as a means to encourage Sri Lankans working overseas to remit foreign earnings via legal and formal channels into the country.

The gazetted Import and Export Control Regulations came under criticism when it was published recently with several expatriate workers raising concerns about the legalities of the importation of electric vehicles.

During the Cabinet briefing yesterday, Cabinet Spokesman Bandula Gunawardena said a decision was made to present the gazette to parliament for approval so that concerns regarding the same, as expressed by expatriate workers, can be addressed.

A decision was made by the government in August to allow Sri Lankans working abroad to import electric vehicles under a freshly launched scheme.

Those who have remitted US$ 20,000 or more between 1 May 2022 and 31 December 2022 will be able to obtain a permit to import an electric car. Those who remit US$ 3,000 or more between 1 May 2021 and 1 May 2022 will be allowed to import an electric two-wheeler.

Every Sri Lankan who is working overseas and remits his hard-earned foreign earnings via legal and formal channels into the country must be insane. As long as the criminal Rajapaksa mafia family is in power through their puppet Ranil, every dollar will disappear to the Virgin Islands or anywhere else .

They were giving vehicle permits to henchmen in government and doctors leaving others when they contribute nothing but fill their pockets and earn enough to pay fully with tax and buy vehicles . governments never considered foreign workers but now they realize the importance

Completely ridiculous idea. There's a 2-3 year wait for new electric cars due to a shortage of rare earth metals and chips. Another scam to grab the dollars from expat workers!

Guess what our dump fools will be making all the pamporiya saying we got USD Hahaha... this country will never ever go beyond the low income status!!!! Period !!!!

This is ridiculous! Stop wasting energy and start productivity. Stop importing and start exporting. Only way to get back on our feet. Country is dragged down the drains and enough already!!!!!

Before allowing immigrant to import vehicles, bar the vehicles imported by the MPs and Ministers sans any gazette notification and that process ruins the economy further bad to worse manner.

These laws are all for the poor only while the rich continue to steal and become more rich. We don't have people with a vision in this country.

Once again it will be queues to charge the necessary electrical energy for the vehicles. What I can't understand is with the outages of electricity on a daily basis and the public in the dark and no solution for increasing the power supply the govt is mixing up its priorities ?
