If the government provides electric three-wheelers under installment schemes, we will convert our fossil fuel three-wheelers to electric and will be able to provide more profitable and easy service for passengers, the All-Island Three-Wheeler Drivers' Union (AITWDU) lamented.
AITWDU President Lalith Dharmasekera said the electric three-wheelers will be able to re-charge from sunlight. The maintenance is very low. Therefore, the association is hoping that the government will provide an installment payment scheme for the initial payment to continue with the service, he said.
"Now we are getting five litres of petrol for three-wheelers per week. After we convert our three-wheelers to electric, there will be no need for fuel," he said. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)

There's no need to give concessions just allow importation of electric motors, batteries

It is a good time now to get rid off and ban all 3-Wheelers step by step within the next 5 years.

They want to mess up the electric transportation system as well. The damage you guys did to the economy by running the petrol mafia a enough!

The conversation of a fossil fuel threewheeler into an electric one is not an easy task and it is more expensive Therefore the owners of the threewheelers should be accustomed to the recently introduced QR system

Concessions are how we got in this mess in the first place. Banning 3 wheelers of all kinds is the way to go. Forces people into the private sector which benefits the country. Would be all for electric scooters being made available though, they can get themselves to their new jobs then.

Three wheeler culture messed up Sri Lanka's image and our traditional heritage, therefore, it is high time to consider re-export those JUNK to another third world nation that welcomes the move. Total wipe out of three wheeler will be the BEST solution that every Sri Lankan is dreaming for.

Spot on, Jay. However, concessions have been our worst enemy. Why even import the batteries and the motors? Create a framework to include production, and quality control/assurance, and these industries will take off. Maybe, a tax holiday would provide an incentive. We will be exporting to ting to uckin' India.

We need more efficient transport system consisting of buses, trains and some taxis, not 3-wheelers that can carry only 3 people and changing direction every second like some fish.

All the same where the cost is concerned, there won't be any more difference due to the high cost of Electricity in SriLanka.

I Totally Agree with some comments sri Lanka need to improve public transport system we need to reduce traffic congestion treewheelers motor bikes need to be looked seriously to reduce the traffic and make roads safe for all...we need more decent public transport double deck busses etc colombo to homagama colombo to panadura have very limited government registered three wheels on by roads and gradually fade off if nesersory if pulic transport make effective then pulic magority will use busses and trains instead riding or driving...make real sence to improve the traveling system in specialy colombo catchment

3 wheelers should be registered and made to pay income tax. Number of autos should be reduced, in addition to creating a mafia and pollution they have created a culture of easy money by not working
