How much has been spent on developing cricket? - Arjuna asks after SLC reveal record surplus

Chairman of the National Sports Council and Cricket World Cup winning captain Arjuna Ranatunga intimated that despite Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) reporting a record surplus, it was of no benefit towards the development of the sport in the country.

He made this statement following SLC's revelation that it had recorded a surplus of Rs 6.3 billion in the last financial year, which it added was the highest ever in its history.

"This surplus is not from playing and winning matches. This money is from television rights, from the International Cricket Council and sponsorships, so you cannot attribute this success to the SLC administration," Ranatunga told the media today.

"We must check and see how much of this has actually been spent on the development of Sri Lanka cricket."

He further aluded to this point by expressing disappointment that Sri Lanka had to qualify for the Cricket World Cup.

"It's disappointing about the team, and how much it has fallen. When we were playing, we didn't even pay attention to teams like Afghanistan. But now they are outperforming us and even beating them has become a challenge. Going forward it appears even qualifying for the World Cup is a challenge for us," Ranatunga added. (Susil Premalal)

We need to see the facts and truth as it is, Arjuna might be many things. But he was a world class captain and one who was very passionate about the game and how sri lanka was represented. This is not bogus or boasting he has walked the talk, talked the talked and talked the walk as well. We are watching matches for a simple lack of entertainment in this country for a minimum buck and to show off a bogus patriotism. The real need to win for the country is gone. Players play only to earn big bucks..... So its not a surprise we have plain ordinary talent....Nothing in the shade of the 1996 era... When every country push upwards, we are happy to roll down the ditch in the name of the Dollar.. How pathetic...!

In Sri Lanka, everyone blames the other person. But why Arjuna is not taking up these at the operational level? Why he is not demanding regular audit and disclosure of expenses of Sri Lanka Cricket? Arjuna should take the initiative and clean this corrupt SLC management.

Look back,Winning the W.C in 1996 and after where did SriLanka Cricket head to? Who took over SLC,? What happened to the Visionaries who did a dedicated job to win the 1996 Cricket World cup? Where is gamata Cricket? Did Somebody runaway from SriLanka sometime later with the Loot. Great Aravinda de Silva was denied captaincy. Now look who's Talking about surplus.
