Former President Chandrika Kumaratunge has requested President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to consider giving presidential pardon to imprisoned former MP Ranjan Ramanayake.
In a letter to the President, she said Ramanayake is a person who is genuinely working towards the betterment of the helpless people even by spending his own funds as an artiste, politician and a social worker.
"As you granted presidential pardon to several people who were convicted for grave offences with mercy, I believe that you will accept the fact that it is unfortunate for Ranjan Ramanayake to undergo immense suffering for a charge that is not so serious," she said in the letter.
Ms. Kumaratunge said she was appealing to the President, as a senior citizen of this country and as a former Head of State, to be kind enough to grant Presidential amnesty to Ramanayake, who was in jail for nearly eight months. (Ajith Siriwardana)

Such a situation wouldn't have arisen if any President, past or present , had used his or her discretion to judge each case on its merit or demerit considering the gravity of the offence committed by each convict in granting amnesty disregrding political affiliations without leaving room for anyone to beg from the incumbent to grant amnesty to selected convicts.

all the presidents thought it was expedient to have judicial contempt in the interest of the ruling party to suppress dissent and now you beg from a scumbag for mercy? what a shame

In a situation where a former Head and present opposition either beg or are silent about amnesties granted to convicted prisoners for reasons known to them, I feel sorry about all other convicts who are languishing in jails as life or long-term inmates whose only fault is, apart from the pronounced verdict upon conviction, that they do not belong to either the tri-forces, clergy or politicians judging by amnesties received by persons in the recent past, making our jidiciary and rule-of-law a mockery.
