The Agriculture Ministry is ready to import 176,000 hatching eggs instead of parent hens to solve the current shortage of chicken meat and eggs in the country, National Livestock Development Board (NLDB) Chairman Prof. H.W. Cyril said.
He pointed out that 44,000 eggs per week will be received by our country within a period of one month.
A discussion in connection with this tool place at the Agriculture Ministry yesterday (8) regarding the steps to be taken to eliminate the shortage of chicken meat and eggs in the country.
"Due to the delay in importing parent hens, importing of eggs and chicks is done. As it becomes easier to get chicken for eggs and meat within a short period of one month, it has been decided to import the eggs stored in this way," the Minister said.
Therefore, Minister Amaraweera instructed the officials to take steps to provide the chicks obtained from the Netherlands to the private sector poultry farms at a subsidized price, which were closed down during the COVID-19 outbreak.
Accordingly, the stock of hatching eggs is to be received in Sri Lanka within the next month. (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)

What happened to Indian eggs? Remember, these politicians love to import anything and everything and destroy the local economy. The minister is talking about importing, but nothing tangible planning to enhance the poultry industry, but allowing imports of poultry food. They can simply take away the import ban and they will not do that since we have headless gurus in Parliament. How can we expect the professionals to stay in this country when the crooks and modayas rule the country?

Why not from India or China or any nearby countries? It will be much cheaper and can adapt to ot and humid South Asian weather.
