Govt. MPs urge Health Minister to take action against Ministry Secretary

A number of government legislators requested Health Minister Keheliya Rambukwella yesterday to take action against Ministry Secretary Sanjeewa Munasinghe over the reinstatement of Dr. Shafi Shihabdeen who is facing charges over unlawful sterilisation of women who sought treatment from him during their childbirths.

Dr. Shihabdeen was on compulsory leave after investigations conducted by the authorities of the Kurunegala hospital found him guilty. Some government MPS have taken the view that inquiries have not been conducted at the ministry level afterwards leading to his reinstatement with salary arrears. The Ministry Secretary is accused of not acting properly against Dr. Shihabdeen.

Asked about it, Minister Rambukwella told Daily Mirror that he received such a request from quite a number of government MPS. He also said there was some controversy involved in the whole process, and he will look into it.

“Ï will look at the procedure to see whether there is any error. Afterwards, I will take action,” he said.(Kelum Bandara)
