Claiming that opposition politicians including Sajith Premadasa were bragging in political arena that a National People's Power (NPP) government would take over private property, NPP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake said today they were citing a part of JVP's policy statement issued in 1980 and urged Sajith Premadasa to get updated.

Speaking at a seminar at the Foundation Institute in Colombo, he said the topic that the opposition politicians were quoting from JVP's website was in the policy statement issued some 43 years ago in 1980 and said that NPP's policies have changed now to suit the modern world.

"That policy statement was approved in a JVP convention in 1979 and released in 1980 when socialist camp was very strong. We issued that plan to suit that particular era. In the space of 43 years, the strong socialist camp collapsed. New political camps have emerged based on United States, Europe, China and Russia etc. People's aspirations, technology, market, communication have changed as never before. We live in a world that is contrast to what we had in 1980s. We are a political force which is flexible and able to grasp the changes in the world scenario and changes accordingly," he said.

Dissanayake said the JVP has issued several action plans in 2000, 2015 and 2019 in line with changes in the world.

"We issued an action plan "Expectations" in 2019 focusing all sectors including agriculture and education etc. Sajith is tweeting citing something that happened a long time ago, in 1980. We call him to get updated. Sajith is clueless about political situation in 1980 and today,' he said.

NPP leader said Sajith Premadasa is claiming to be updated with new technology but he is not updating on political changes, and challenged him for an open debate on economic policies without resorting to traditional political mud-slinging. (Ajith Siriwardana)

Oh! I'm scared! I'm going to switch off lights and stay in darkness tonight! Don't want myself on the gatepost tomorrow morning.

Average Middle Class Sri Lankan Sunday, 19 February 2023 05:35 PM

Sajith Premadasa, son of the president Premadasa is a pampered brat who lives in a different reality than an average Sri Lankan. I highly doubt Sajith has ever travelled in a crowded train and been to a government hospital to get medicine or was at a que from the childhood. The country needs educated, uncorrupted team of leaders coming from the middle class, who knows the daily struggles and troubles of the people and empathize with them, who can walk with the kings, not losing the touch with the common man. Ranil, Sajith, MR, GR, BR Namal all have lost the touch with the common man. That's why people reject them and embrace NPP. Go AKD! Break the chain! Form a government for the people by the people. End this crony capitalism and pave the way for the capitalist system formed on liberty, equality, and justice - Social Capitalism.

Sajith and his cronies know a certain defeat if the election is held .

I do not trust JVP based on their recent actions. The aspirations of their members are to get the money from those who have it and then distribute to their people .

Sri Lanka like to experiment on failed systems. So I wouldn't be surprised the communist JVP win this election.

Ok if the JVP stand on economic reforms are going to be done as stated. Can AKD issue a statement whether a JVP led future government will allow private medical colleges in Sri Lanka. When SAITM was opened they agitated with street protests backed by the powerful JVP backed GMOA until it was closed down, whereas the few deficiencies SAITM had could have been resolved with the government intervention. All those students who cannot enter State universities because of the Z-score system go abroad spending millions of dollars . Establishment of private medical colleges would have saved much needed forex and also attracted foreign students bringing in more dollars. JVP, we await your response.

1979-80 was the time to go for a market economy and how the tiger economies came up whilst our Marxists were planning on taking over private property. Though the market economy was not successful in Sri Lanka due to crony capitalism that is the only way out - then and now.

We Lankans love to be in the dark. Monday, 20 February 2023 07:25 AM

For the people; of the people; of the people is myth and has been proven several times. Today, we see for the rulers; of the rulers and by lies and racial and religious hatred propaganda. Will the people realize this reality? That is the day, we see light!

What is the JVP Chinthanaya now to lift the weight heavily put on peoples shoulders making changes or turnarounds from Mahinda Chinthanaya, who were also the co-authors of it, is not clear or convinced as most people know of both the tree and leaves.

so why did you failed to update your website?

    Leonard Monday, 20 February 2023 09:19 AM

What AKD did not say is that they had failed to "update" their website before this matter had been brought to public notice.

    Ranjith Monday, 20 February 2023 09:38 AM

A week ago I visited the JVP official website and downloaded their policy document. The policy states in several places that they (JVP) is going to do away with private property like in North Korea. All economic activity will be by the government and people will get paid according to their work. That is the worst kind of communism that failed in all communist countries. Will AKD please explain how this policy remained in their official website in 2023 February? If it was prepared in 1980, how did it get into the website that was designed much later? Other parts of the website are updated with latest information. AKD will have a lot of explaining to do.

Experience of commuting in a crowded bus or going to govt hospital dosent at all make any form of qualification to contest presidential or any election. Our country is bankrupt and in a economic mess or a steep pit, this is not a time to try out new experiments, last presidential election we tried an experiment and rest is history. Vote wisely, big talks will not help the country but only ones ego, us common sense if any thing is still left out.
