Germany has sought Sri Lanka’s support for a resolution at the United Nations against Russia, a visiting German MP said.
Speaking to a group of journalists after wrapping up a visit to Sri Lanka, German MP Dr. Peter Ramsauer said that he raised the issue with President Ranil Wickremesinghe.
The European Union had this week circulated the resolution to be voted on by the UN General Assembly on the eve of next week’s first anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
The resolution calls for a cessation of hostilities and a peace that ensures Ukraine’s “sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity.”
Last year Sri Lanka abstained from voting on a resolution against Russia
Sri Lanka maintains a close relationship with Russia and follows a “friends with all” foreign policy.
Dr. Ramsauer is Rapporteur for Sri Lanka and the Maldives in the Foreign Affairs Committee of the German Bundestag (Parliament).
His visit falls in line with the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Sri Lanka and Germany established in 1953.
Dr. Peter Ramsauer, together with German Ambassador Holger Seubert, held several high-level meetings in Colombo with senior members from the Government as well as with opposition representatives, civil society representatives, members of the press and other stakeholders. (Easwaran Rutnam)

What people in Sri Lanka do not understand is the fact that Putin started this war already in 2014. Asking for joining the NATO by Ukraine is a response to that. Ukraine is an European country, so Putin also invaded Europe.

What people like you need to understand is that Ukraine signed an agreement to be a neutral state and never align itself with NATO. Did you also forget that Ukraine has the most corruption out of all the European nations? Russia's problem is with NATO and not Europe. Learn to distinguish between the two. If you can't, your ignorance is what will lead us to the next world war

We don't want war anywhere in the world. Russia should agree for a ceasefire and assure independence of Ukrine, but Sri Lanka cannot afford to gi against any country, specially Russia, Russian supply is pivotal for our survival.

Sri Lanka may be a poor third world country, but must take a stand and should not stay neutral. Voting in favor of Russia for cheap oil or voting against Russia in return for business with Europe is not what the UN stands for.
